Just had a friend ask about the Egg Buddy, some contraption made in the UK I think. Has anyone given this a fair trial? Are they worth anything, as far as being accurate for goshawk eggs?

I have used the Buddy now for 3 years and find it to be of great value in my Incubator room. I have used it with Gos eggs and it worked fine for me. I can normally find a heart beat at about 10 days of incubation but where I find it most usfull is when you have one of those eggs that just wont pip and is late all you do is just pop it on the egg pad close the lid and watch the readout for heart and movement so you can be sure your egg is still alive.
On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 9

They are made by Avian Biotech in Truro I will dig out the link tomorrow they cost just over £200 and can be used on the mains electric or by batteries. For me it was money well spent.
Kev it is a small plastic box with an electronic sensor inside you just sit your egg on a rubber pad and the machine monitors heart beat/rate and movement in the egg there is also a scale on the right that shows the strength of movement. The normal heart rate is about 220 so if you get a higher reading you know to watch the egg as it is behaving abnormally

the number is 01872262777 i paid £200 to years ago they are £156 now

It's a device that basically tells you if the egg is fertile and alive, another form of candling except more accurate. They aren't cheap from what i can remember but couldn't say a price on them.

Thanks Terry. I had one of the first ones sold by AV.Bio here in the states, I think four years ago now. It was useless for goshawk eggs, even to the point where i put a pipped egg on it and it still couln't detect thre heart beat, though it did "hear" the cheeping.. After talking to Frank, he said they were in fact aware of this problem with goshawk eggsand they were working on a more sensitive unit but it hadn't come to fruition yet. Seems they may have got it going now, thanks for the info..

What are the earliest results people are getting from the egg buddy on Goshawk eggs this year?

Used my mark two yesterday for peregrine eggs. Picking up at 10 days, movement and heart beat.

last year i could tell at about 12 - 14 days, safer than candeling the eggs and risking damaging them, useful for imprints as you can take into the pen with you and take them from under the bird test them then put them back, i swear by them havent used a candeler for 5 years or more, since i stopped using the candler i have hatched out more, i think you tend not to disturb them in the first ten days of incubation so it must be better for them.

some you will drop in the buddy and it will be in the right spot, turn it on and you get a heart beat, especially the older they get in the egg, or most early dors wont get a heart beat, but as the egg cools down the chick moves to the warmer part of the egg causing the wings to move on the display, hense being on a solid surface with lid shut and not touching the surface or moving about on the floor as vibration is easily detected even moving around and vibration transfering through the floor for the larger austringer !!!. if you are unsure about whether you are getting vibration (false movement readings) then get a egg out the fridge put it in and let it settle a few seconds then move around if you get wing movement on your display then you have vibration problems so move the buddy to a more solid place like a side board on a concrete floor

there is 4 tubs arriving in the morning, may be 5 carnt remember what i put in!! i am going to borrow one of your flasks to take some over to alex in germany if that is ok the weekend.
once you are used to the buddy and tried different tests as in the vibrations then it is fairly straight forward, in my opinion less damaging than getting carried away candeling goshawks eggs which is easily done as they are sooooo thick to shine light through unlike falcon eggs

hi paul, iuse mine its the mark two and the only thing i find is that if the egg is not at its best position you can get a zero reading, so best thing to do is change egg position if you fail to recieve pulse first time, but never disgard eggs showing no pulse, good thread thou

I wouldn't trust it 100% with Goshawk eggs, a few that it declared "dead" last year are coming up to a year old with a good season under their belt:-)

like i said chris i never disgard the egg i just put them back in, as you never know, but ( and i am in no means trying to insult your intelligence!) did you read it right, i,ve had some eggs that i couldnt get a heart beat on at the late 20 days but did get movement from the display, i could only assume that the egg shell was thicker on them than others, and was just a bit too thick to detect the heartbeat,

Do Goshawk breeders who have used this item think that it is worth the money? and are they easy to use?

I have had them from the early days and if it says an egg has an hart beat then it has and its alive, great. It it shows nothing then the last thing I will do is to throw the egg out because I have hatched lots that showed no sign of life till they hatched!! Make of that what you will?
