for the last few months my fhh has decided she does not want to
wear her jesses anymore , every time i try to thread the jesses through the eyelet she snatches her leg up and i have a real battle on my hands to put them on , would like to nip this problem in the bud before it gets any worse,i don,t know what is making her start this or if i have done something to induce this problem:?: any good advice would be welcome as i can,t be the only one to have this problem.......can i ?????:!:

is she free lofted mate, if so permanant flying jesses are your answer, and if shes fat weight it could just be boredom and the fact that at that weight she doesn't really need you or her jesses, well in her mind anyway

Are you changing mews for flying? Try permanent flying jesses. Only one set to remove and put back then! Also I presume you have checked her legs and feet for any other problems that may be causing her discomfort when you change the jesses?
Try using a tiring to distract her when you are changing the jesses, it then becomes something pleasurable and she will soon stand without food while you change them.

sometimes also they get shy of you putting them in and out if they are stiff and you have to use force pulling and pushing. if it a real problem makesure you use perm flying straps and try a set of bullets for the field. Not a full solution i know as they are NOT suitable for tethering in mews but they are less stressful in the field prior to flying.

My wife says I have a lot of annoying habits too. None of them have to do with pulling jesses. I do tug on the ball and chain on occasion but not enough where you would hear it rolling across the floor. Anyway if you've ever tried to change from mews to field jesses with a passage gyr your in for a real treat. they have ticklish feet!!!! So what I do is go pick her up, hood her and head for where I intend on going through the day's drama. The best way is to keep one foot occupied while working on the other. A touch or a tickle is all that is needed. While she's concentrating on one I work on the other. Just a touch does it. I use my pinkey finger and touch one foot then slip the field jess and telemetry on the opposite leg. Then switch legs. I'm assuming your hooding your bird. I hope your hooding your bird. Please tell me your hooding your bird.

its a harris, it shouldn't really be nescessary to hood her to change its jesses. if it is ticklish feet that can be solved by stroking the foot with a feather till the bird ignores it then stopping when it does

have you tried bullet jesses,
You can slip them on so quickly without the pulling on the leg like normal jesses.
This way you could reinforce the control without a battle that she may be winning.
When she becomes at ease with the bullet jesses then introduce the normal jesses.

I hood all my birds and I come from the uk. I couldnt live without a hood for my HH or the eagle. makes for a much smoother field performance, no silly bating, my birds dont get to see other hawks killing and or eating, when at feild meets, and if i want to finish flying while in company i can feed my hawk up and still beat cover for my freinds, and more importantly when i take a foto of the days bag it deosnt look like my hawk is being held back from its previously caught victims. soooooooo why wouldnt you hood train a harris, or a gos, redtail, spar just like you would a falcon.:yawinkle:

Ohhh, groan. I thought everyone hooded their birds. I'm so sorry. Well forget everything I've posted or said. I guess I've lived here too long and am not up with the latest techinques in falconry.

I guess I'm on the wrong side of the fence. Again. I've had two birds I couldn't/didn't hood. All my fault and I take full credit for being incompetent. I guess I don't feel so bad anymore

once had a gate every time i approached it the bird would bate
allways been taught to not backdown but keep confronting itseen as good manning the hood could be seen as a easy way out .
just a point of view not being critical

well dont know who taught you to confront it but i would say thats B-llcks.
Why constantly stress the bird? yes nothing better than a bird bating about stressed and putting pressure on fragile legs.......if you think a calm hooded bird is wrong then perhaps you need to re-visit your thinking.....
good manning my trumper........bad husbandry more like.....mind im not being critical either:roll:

Whoa, wait guys. I do the exact same thing. If a bird doesn't like something I'm libel to block it right by that something. Once had a goofy imprinted hybrid that hated my apple tree. Yes, I said that. She got to the point she liked being underneath it. But, In my backward way of thinking I still hood them. You never know what is going to happen in the field. Besides that the guys I hawk with would take a very dim view of having an unhooded bird in the truck.
