I'm thinking of taking up Falconry and would like advice on courses. I'm not sure if it is for me and I really need to know all the pitfalls before I commit.I would like to enroll on a week long course in the summer? if so, which one?
Is it best to do level 1,2,3 from Glen eagles or go to Hereford, Bedale, Ripon etc as they all seem to offer courses and all are the same price. I wantt the best available training as I feel taking on the responsibility of a harris hawk is a big job.
Hoping you can help

Hi Gatto,
If you're thinking of taking up Falconry and want to see what it involves before going for it, you be better joining a Falconry Club and seeing if you can tag along on field meets etc and see if Falconry is for you rather than a course during the summer, this can't show you what Falconry is really about.

Gatto,
while a course is good its much better to try and find a falconer or even a center that will take you on as an aprentice. this way you can learn at a steady pace and get lots of first hand experiance rarther than having to cram everything in in a few days.
hope this helps

When looking at a course look at the back up service the place you choose is able to offer. This can be worth more than the course itself if things go wrong. Centre enviroments can some times lead to an inability to offer after course support. Regards K.

Yes i agree.
I don't necessarily agree. It could be argued that joining a club and going on field meets shows you what its like to be in a club and go on fieldmeets and that this is only a part of the falconry scene and not for everyone's taste.
There are plenty of people in falconry that enjoy their sport without going on field meets or being an active club member. If it is for you then fine, it is a great way of meeting like minded people some of who will no doubt be helpful and able to guide you.
A course can either supplement this or act as a starting point for someone with a more independant nature. It is not the be all and end all, there is more to learn than a week's course can teach and to this end I agree with the comments about checking out the aftercare that a centre running a course offers to its attendees.

firstly im glad your doing your homework before you commit a lot of people just jump in with no knowledge at al :-|
courses can be great unfortunately ive never been on one so cant offer you any advice there but..
i learnt loads from voluntering at a centre - you dont have to pay and it lasts longer than a week, if you have the time to volunteer its great! even if its once a week!
if not then try a few clubs, where bouts are you from? im sure theres one near you!
but yes courses are great! i hear Yarak might do a course that is god, in devon!

the Yorkshire Falconry Club meet the third Wednesday in the month at Wentworth, Rotherham. 40 miles drive south (45 mins) from you. Most of the field meets are held near to Otley. Great bunch of people and I'm sure you would be made most welcome.
They will be running a mentoring scheme to help new falconers.
