Hi interested in peoples opinions on what makes the ideal vest

what material, what type of straps, strap fastening/adjustment?
Pocket size(s) and position(s)?/number of pockets? type of pocket fastening or anything else that is/isn't or should be on a vest!!- what(if anything) is wrong with the ones out there at the moment- how would you improve them

I realise that everyone will have different preferences-but would be really interested in hearing your thoughts/ideas

I have 2 different hawking vests, one Doug Pineo and one turkey hunting vest from the US.

I used both during the season, the turkey vest is made from cotton and is ideal in the hotter months.

The Doug Pineo vest is the best design and has quality materials but is a little over kill during the hotter months. This design has been copied to death but none equal it.

Make sure the material you get is machine washable, by the end of the season your vest will be stinking - so with this in mind I'd avoid the leather or leather trim vests on the market.

Jim.

My own choice, is Doug pineo,, a lot of thought went into this vest, and it was one of the first,, and still is one of the best. I have a couple but still use a barbour game bag, when hawking.

I have one of ben longs leather vests, they are a copy of the pineo design.

It has been heavily used this year, most days- and after a single seasons use is starting to split at the seams where the weight is exerted. on the shoulder straps and game pouch ;-)

Having said that the design is practical and does the job- The material has to stand up to a lot of wear and tare and although there is one or two rips on the leather im sure i would of torn a cojura vest to ribbons!

I too use the Doug Pineo vest a genuine one. As has been said the quality of this vest by far outshines the copies.
I personally have a problem with all the rip off copies of Dougs work, he spent a long time designing and developing these vests and as soon a some people see how good they are the copies appear and Doug looses sales. I could if I needed a new vest buy a copy for about £25 but I would sooner pay the extra to Doug and have the real thing and let the designer have some small proffit from all his hard work
The copy vests do not last long in the field so remember you get what you pay for

I use a fly fishing vest, with a few minor modifications. Cost was £2, new out of Freebie paper. Plenty of zip up pockets for car keys, swivels etc! Probably not suitable for short and broadwing use, but fine for longwings.

was talking to doug pineo at the f.fair about his vests and he was saying about all the copies that have been made, his are the only ones that i can operate the zips with one hand, the best money can buy,the same can be said of his gloves.(

Spot on, indestructable - copies look the same but aren't the same quality, buy once is my motto.

Fishing vest - with a game bag. Those 'proper' hawking vests are not made with ladies anatomy in mind

Likewise! I purchased a Doug Pineo hawking vest a few years back excellent piece of kit and very well made to. I think i've seen garlands advertising them over here but they were more expensive than if you were to get one from the states.
