Out of interest, has anyone imprinted a Jack as a semen donor? My colleague and I are planning on producing, amongst other things, perlins. We have a stud tiercel and now, at last female merlins to imprint. We also have an imprint female peregrine and eyass Jacks ready for imprinting. Is it practical, or even possible to go about it the reverse way and inseminate a peregrine with semen from a Jack?
Any practical information gratefully received.

I know of 2 imprinted Jacks both very good imprints but neither have gave semen yet, they are both 3. I suppose they can be breed and have Merlin into Peregrine. Though I am not sure if a Jack could produce enough semen quanity wise, regular enough anyway. And I bet the enviroment in a pere could be a bit harsh on Merlin Semen so you would have to put it in at the optimum time Plus you could be throwing away the chance to produce a female Peregrine so if its a commericail venture you would be making less and a good tiercel is only a little under the price of Perlin. I have found as well with breeding Perlins some tiercels semen seem to fare better and produce more viable eggs, and also get less abnormalitys. Once you get a compatible Pairing they are no different to hatch than pure Merlins. Good luck

Yes the sample was good quantity and quality, i could have put the semen into a laying pere, but she was full of gyr semen at the time, and i have had enough this season.:-x

Right, that's all very informative, but what I want to know is, has anyone actually done it? Also, has anyone used imprints in the production of pure merlins?...........

No, it's not a commercial venture. Believe it or not, we're not the least bit interested in making money from it.

no reason why it cannot be done, the hardest part is getting semen from the Jack, insemanation of the females are easy.

Sorry guys, cant help on the ai seen as Ive never been into ai, but if its any help have had a few imprint jacks, that like muskets, went on to breed naturally, however flying them during the summer they would behave as large falcons, tail flicking, food passing, chupping, on ledges, so I asumme would donate, but if I remember it was quite late in the year.

not yet, but who knows, i would have thought it would be easier to breed pure with pairs, most breeders only use imprints females for hybrids, but next year we may be looking to produce pure merlins with Ai.
your original question was can imprint jacks produce semen, the answer to that is yes.

I thought I'd read once that someone in the States had done it (Jack:Falcon) - I'm encouraged by your comments - I was just wondering if they might be a bit bigger than Tiercel:Merlin ones given the difference in egg size - I'm looking forward to trying it anyway.

As far as I am aware Tommy Graham of Northern Falconry is producing merlins from a pair of imprints.

Its been a lot of threads on this subject recently, one of them was a "public announcement" from the admin explaining the bars and why they are there.

I might - it depends if they're nutritious enough to feed baby merlins otherwise it's probably not worth it.

I can confidently say here that if LJ was stuck for food, He'd feed his own children to the merlins.
