i would opt for the tail bell over the leg bell...especially if you are poor! the leg bells take more punishment then the tail bells and therfor stop ringing sooner...but you have to find the tail bell when the hawk molts, which is fine if you dont fly through the molt

can birds be flown during the molt then ?
i thought they had to be left alon ?

How do the wild birds ever make it??
Yes, of course you can fly thru the moult. The wild birds manage just fine, and so can you. Old dry brittle feathers break, soft and suptle blood feathers don't.

Just ribbing you, Paddy. :-)
You can fly a bird year round if you wanted to. Most falconers choose not to for several reasons that we won't get into right now because we'd be highjacking Greg's thread.

Just to keep this on topic, great job with the tailmount Greg!

Also, for those of you who can't get the .22 shells, most hardware stores sell small diameter brass tubing that would work just as well.

i know mate...but it was the "how do the wild birds ever make it" that cracked me up.

I like summer flying...its more fun, warmer, and the days are longer. Its got a lot going for it. its also better for the hawk (mentaly and physically) to keep flying all year round and its great for a young hawk that never really got to grips with winter quarry...the summer bunnies are very good for a young hawk to get some practice on. But dont hunt unless you have very good quarry numbers in your area, or they already have a price on their heads and will be culled in that area anyway. You will just spoil your winter hunting.

no doubt you will soon be told on this thread that you shouldnt hunt in the summer :( and i will get some stick for telling you different. I can only suggest that you try both and decide for your self.

summer is a great time for flying falcons to the lure, gives them a chance to catch thermals and play, I personally wouldn't hunt in the summer.
