Cats are a constant worry, what bird are you considering?

This choice might waylay some of your fears

Paddy - make your aviaries and weatherings cat proof and dont leave your hawks teathered in the garden unattended. I have 2 cats of my own and dont trust them for a second with the hawks - not that they have ever done anything, but you just cant trust a predator. Cat bites are lethal, whatever the size of your hawk :yawinkle:

I have a male harris' and 2 cats. The cats seem to give the hawk a fairly wide berth when they walk past, and the hawk doesn't get upset by the cats. I suppose the only thing to add, common sense really, is make sure the hawk is not left out on the weathering ground from dusk onwards, when the cats might chance their arm and he/she can't see them coming.

Spot on FHF. The other problem that is hard to get around is when it comes to imprints. Even with cat proofed weathering areas the young birds grow up thinking the cats are syblings, that goes for dogs also. That is no big deal at home, but in a hunting scenario it could be trouble or even death for the imprint. They just don't always view them as a threat until it is to late.

I have three cats, the neighbours have numerous cats and I have no problems at all. They are all terrified of the FHH and they have all learnt fear of feather from my rooster who is....the rooster from hell! No feather EVER gets killed in my garden; we have numerous nests and also two returning pairs of swallows who send back up to three clutches every year, as they have done for as long as memory serves for those that have ever lived here. The sparrows and blackbirds think they own the place...and the swallows are always flying into the house. Damn cat threads drive me crazy...it is possible to get a situation that works without slaughter...also, if your BOP is bowed on the lawn, then it's your responsibility to safeguard it's welfare.Well, that's what I think anyway!

As far as I was aware cat bites were lethal for birds of prey, and can be nasty for humans too. I wouldnt want a cat managing to get a bite in, even if it eventually came off worst....would sort of defeat the object :yawinkle:

used to have a few of the neighbours cats come in and use our garden for a toilet

since i got jester there are a lot less. They tend to go round it nowadays.

my 2 dont seem to mind too much but they do give him fairly wide berth

Once had a Red bit antibiotics as precaution but no problem. Maybe kitty had cleaned its teeth?? Best avoided though 100% agreed.

Kennelre,
I do understand where you are coming from....You stated that you "Fed" cats don't hunt or catch song birds.....If they are out all day....how do you know?

This is as far as I am going to go with a cat thread. Lets just leave the unknown comments behind and work on the common ground we have as falconers.....Cats are cats.....So leave it alone and post about Falconry

I have to agree. Not only Cats but Fox's could pop in for a meal. I couldn't beleive my eyes a couple of days ago - two huge Peacocks in the garden!!!
I have been at a display at a wildlfe park and seen peacocks try and kill falcons that landed on the ground.........

a nice big FEEO on a wire system so it has the ability to fly several feet across the front of your mews. that should stop the cats getting close to your harris.!!!
