View Full Version : Scottish Hood (bit of fun)

The Royal blue didnt come out very well.... i think I watered it down too much  Chuffed with my "thistle" top knot though! This hood is "Scottish" Tiercel size 46S.... its fully lined with sciver leather for a smooth interior. Its a nice and soft kip as well so it will be a "kind" first hood.... if you know what I mean.

Nice hood griff, is that by any chance, real gortex,, braces, as Ive been led to believe that,, gortex, made under licence is a little hard to get hold of,, if it is no worries, if its not I can source you some from a friend, if you like, I only mention as I have seen one or two other materials used, that would not bind as well as ,gortex..

Hi Hawka

Have you got a pic of the "crest" as well..... that Coat of Arms does not have a "Crest" ... that indicates to me that the Coat of Arms is more to do with a "Surname" ? Is the crest the same as the charge..... a hand?

Griff how much you selling them for mate...

Hi Lee.... it all depends on the design and the work put into them... The Welsh hood was a B*****D.....

So

£35 for a relativley straight forward design and add a £10 on for something more complicated..... these hoods are taking as long as a Dutch hood to make :!: They are all fully lined on the inside with "skiver" leather as well :)

wow...its looks good .... you can trim back at the edge of the "soft gape" if needed :) Just confirms to me that the "Slijper" hood is possibly the best fitting hood pattern ! As long as you supply the correct head measurment then you will get an excellent fit :)

Heike
01-06-2006, 02:19 PM
The pattern must be good Griff,
it was really easy to put on and she was comfy within 30 seconds of hooding, maybe longer braces would be easier, just what I was used to with her old hood.

Thats how a "fit" should be ...as though she has always worn it :) I have seen a "foot up" on the glove within a minute with this pattern. You can see how much more room in the eye there is compared to a Dutch hood.... also the throat strap is "up" and out of the way of the crop when full.... and you can see the amount of room there is for casting... just a great pattern and a "Classic" :)

sorry to go a little off topic, but I'm curious Griff - how do you get your turk's knots on with only one hole? Am I just a little blind and you've covered up the others? Also, how do you get those knots so tight?

Amazing work on the lot though Griff! Good work! what do you use to tool in all the little details?

Fawkes, interested hoodmakers,
Go to,, or order from Tandy's the following step by step Instructional Book by Al Stohlman titled "Figure Carving"..
You will need to purchase as well a Carving knife(blade) and The Basic Figure Carving Kit No 6..
Practice on some tooling leather as I stated in another thread and soon you will be able to carve flowers, horses, grouse, dragons, vikings you name it.
As well, pick up some Tracing film this will allow you to trace the image you want and apply it to your hood..
Good carving!!
Sakerjack,
Ken Hooke

Fawkes,
At the top of the hood, punch a hole where you want the knot to be situated, then on the left and right side of the hole cut your slits vertical just long enough to allow two laces to go thru easily. From the outside pass your first lace thru the right then thru the left in front of the hole and pull thru from inside the hood making sure they are pulled evenly, then repeat behind the hole punch. Then from the top of the hood pull the 4 ends of the lacing Thru the hole, then you may apply your turks knot, bead, or sewn top plate..Very simple,, harder to explain..

Heike's second hood 1/2 way through.. this hood has had a different technique applied to it ... the way that the US hoodmakers make their hoods by "staining" rather than full dye :)
