Thought I’d put a pic of Mike up for you all to see, he’s a 15 day old Tiercel Peregrine (peregrinus peregrinus) bred by Colin Pass of Falconquester Longwings out of his falcons Sky and Arnie. I’m socially imprinting him and he will be flown before being placed in my project. I’m really pleased with him already at 15 days he has huge feet and weighs over 14oz ….Mike (p/s i know the names original)

Hi Mike
BIG Mike looks a bruiser :) Dont worry about being Ginger..... its the colour of the righteous... for we shall inherit the earth!! :D
I was looking at our wild Pere Eyeass's today (about 4 weeks old)..... they had yellow cheek patches ..... is this normal?? They have 4 again this year .... saw a massive stoop from the female ... and a combined effort to see off a Buzzard... great fun!
PeregrinesUK
28-05-2006, 04:36 PM
Hi Griff you can get a lot of variation in colouration in peregrines from almost black to really light sandy coloured ones. Its really nice to see the wild falcons ive been lucky enough to see them most days for the last two years around where i work amazing falcons... Mike

30-05-2006, 09:24 PM
He'll have a few days of tame hack followed by kite training then on to partridge and if hes anything like arnie he'll be on the phesants as well!

Does he like Coke? the last one of the clutch went last night, see what comes out of the second clutch fingers crossed. Sky daughter has also produced a few nice chicks. Which I am really pleased with as I bred her and the 3 lines of peregrines I started with have now all merged in these youngsters.

Curious about the different leg bands... Looking at the picture I assume the different sized bands were used so that you could cut off the one that is not for the bird's sex once it is determined. What are the band on the other leg, tho? Breeder over here tend not to place any other leg bands except for the USF&W band. What's subspecies is it? Looks great:)

Big Mike
he's a good looking bird although they do look more like veloceraptors at that age. I had a female pere from Colin last year and apart from a collision with a motor car she was coming on great. Hoping for some better hawking action this coming season with her when shes completed her moult.
all the best with the new guy.

RD,
Picked up a tiercel last week from Steve Moroney from his half peales pair for my brother.
Weighed in at 1 lb 14 oz.
Steve had one or two from his Scottish pair weighing 1lb 13 oz at 8 weeks.
I flew the first tiercel from the pair 11 or 12 years ago.In the 3rd season it flew at 1lb 9.75 oz.
Didn,t mean to hijack the thread, thought it might be of interest.

Well been a while since i updated this mainly due to doing very little with Mike other than light handling really, he is a great imprint showing good promise for future breeding lots of e-chuping to me and generally steady. With not flying him i fed him up and he was at a constant 1lb 14 1/4oz empty.
The reason behind the lack of flying time was really due to my imprint gos which ive really put everything into flying him everyday possible, we have now reached a point with the gos where i can relax hes taken more head of game than i care to remember and is as fit at fire.
I pick Mike up about 3 weeks ago and started to reduce his weight gradually flying him free at just under 1lb 11oz he was hitting the lure with such force. Now at 1lb 10 1/2oz he is chacing crows with great determination and very clippy style, before i flew the gos today i thought id see if there were any corvids sitting out. There were a pair of magpies sitting next to the feeder by the edge of a large winter wheat field. Off with the hood Mike was off closing the gap very fast missed him on the first attempt did a fast wing over and took him on the next attempt. pics attached Mike

Hi Mike , the hack worked real well put them out at tame hack and watched them , then started increasing the time they were out , then progressed to leaving them out up to 8 hours a day , used to give them a chick before they went out and then bring them into a quail last thing, gyr, barbary always came straight in, peregrine wasnt always on the hack site sometimes out of transmitter range!!! , marshall, r.t.plus, but would nearly always be back as the light started to go, he spent a couple of nights away from the hack site , but was always back early morning, the gyr, barbary, was killed about 2 miles from the hack site by a wild female peregrine , so stopped the hack, peregrine is to be used for a,i, so not been flown since he is still very tame , he is in a chamber until tommorow ,as i need the pen for a imprinted falcon, cheers, mark.

Had a couple of good gull flights one the other day he flew with real style chasing hard through the quarry was watching his feet swing out trying to grab the gull three or four times before i lost sight as they left the quarry and made for the town called him down 10 mins later off the co-op roof  bloody falcons! he was slightly high I felt at 1lb 10 7/8oz- Havent flown today too much wind, I really need to stop flying crow hawks at this site. Well before flying the gos thought id give Mike a spin, after marking a single magpie to a hedge I thought id do a little 'Mark Collins style' flying- Put Mike on the wing with these winds he did a couple of circles the came over at around 100' we ran into the bush shouting causing the magpie flush lifting and winging over going down wind- Mike wings over and starts pumping hard down throwing his feet out he misses on the first attemt (showing his inexperience here) flips up and over pumping down and taking the magpie well let him have his reward from the kill- one happy tiercel.... I actually like this style hawking where the setup allows seems to work well... Mike

I would'nt mind a bit of this magpie hawking, as long as i could bellow instrutions out to a young pair of legs. I am not known for my lightening pace :( mine you I can make a big hole in a hedge :)
