View Full Version : Lost a New Feather
Our FHH is going through her first moult. Disturbingly, she has dropped one of her new deck feathers - will another one replace it in this moult or will she have to go a year before she grows another? Any advice gratefully received!

Thanks Claire,
I realised my mistake and PM'd Kentish to ask him to move it only to see you get there first - you are too efficient!!! :D

1st yr HH lost a deck when it was 3/4 or more grown down, a new one grew down before the moult was finished and was fine, tho very slightly shorter than the other. There had been no damage to the decks during hunting that we were aware of. My friends 1st year male pulled both decks out on a fence just before the end of last season and they have both nearly grown down already. So I woudnt worry about it. I assume it was shed like a moulted feather and not still in the blood ?

I've had it happen before and they generally re-grow as normal, although is gnererally slightly smaller than the others ( as the feathers shorten will sccessive moults). Was it moulted or pinched/broken??
Thanks for your help everyone. It was moulted out last week but she is going through a very slow moult. She hasn't lost any feathers for ages - apart from a new one! We had a warm winter here - until March when the weather went mad and we had snow for weeks. The ferrets went into season early, had their hormone jabs, and then came back into season last month so I am hoping that the moult will continue in earnest now things are warming up.

dont worry about it some birds double moult but it normally happens when they are 2 or 3 and havent had a proper moult all i can think of is the feather didnt sit right and the body wanted it out so there could be a proper one
