I think youre probably best getting in touch with DEFRA asap and getting their opinion rather than relying on what feedback you get from here.

Hi Jim,
An increasing number have "scabs"....best description i can muster around the eyes and cere. Have checked syptoms in books i have on avian medicine and confirmed by Google etc. It's a viral infection with several strains...not all are transferable form different bird species. You can vacinate, just interested if the vets on this site had prior experience of dealing with it.
Cheers Pete.

If you even suspect it might be a pox outbreak you need to get in touch with the authorities.
It may be only a theoretical/academic risk, but if a human managed to contract or become infected with a mutation then EVERYTHING that came in contact with those birds will quite likely need to go through an incinerator, including probably the birds themselves!!!

If you have an enquiring mind, Go and do a search on Google and you will find an article about an Australian bio-research lab that was doing some work with MousePox. Somehow they managed to create a mutation which resulted in the entire lab being closed down under the UN proliferation conventions on the grounds they had created a biological weapon.

I cant find anything on the Defra site stating if Avian Pox is a notifyable disease, but if I was in your shoes I would contact them just to be on the safe side.
Its better than possibly having to feed the local incinerator with your most prized possessions.

It can be a fatal infection, transmitted from wild birds to goshawks for example. Antivirals may be of use, but I would have to check. Falcons are also susceptible.

I do have rcollection from a few years back that avian pox is a notifiable disease. However I cannot find any info on any site as of yet. I guess to be on the safe side contact defra and also speak to a vet. You could try getting in touch with Sprout on this forum. He is clued up.

Sorry, just picked up on this thread. There are many forms of pox, quailpox cannot be caught by BOP's as most (apart from canarypox) are quite host specific. There vare vaccines for poultry but no idea if they are used in this country - one thing to reduce transmission is to fly screen the area - the infection is passed by biting insects. Might be worth getting the scabs checked out, trichomonas, capillaria and candida can also show similar lesions.
