Has any of you had any issues feeding HHs artificially farmed products - chicken/beef?
Unsure if there would be any side effects from any additives (growth hormones, protiens etc) that may be present in some product.
If anyone occasionally uses these foods do you get organic?
(Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question but I'd rather sound dumb and be safe than sorry!)

Its not a dumb question Debbie.
In this day and age we are now all the more aware of what actually (or apparently) is in the food chain, so it is a valid question.
I cannot say that I have had any problems with feeding DOC's for the past 15 years. I dont feed beef. I am unaware of honeybrooks (or similar suppliers) policy is on their quail (antibiotic free?)
Of course the best answer is to breed your own (quail/mice/rats) then you know exactly what has gone into it!

that is in not a dumb question! if you hadnt asked you wouldnt know and you could have fed it to a bird which could have been harmful!
unfortunately im not to sure of your answer! i know people use beef but not sure if its similar to what your asking!
i too use docs and have had no probs my good friend uses rats and some mice nd i dont think they have a problem with them (these i think come from honeybrook?!?)
maybe someone on here can shed some light on the mater!

I wouldnt feed chicken, never had any problems with beef. I cant see anything being given to the animal thats going to harm the hawks to be honest.
Both would be a poor diet for the Hawk though, better to stick with products from someone like Honeybrook, and feed a good vaired whole animal diet with things like Mice, Quail, Rats and DOCs and of course all the things you catch during the season.

Thanks guys.
I've been giving him DOCs, mice and rats - he'll only eat the rats if gutted but I believe this is pretty common.
I like to have those contingency plans for emergencies of something you can get your hands on if something went wrong that is readily available.
Steve - is there any particular cut of beef you use?
Thanks guys.

Hi Amberskye,
What BOP do you have?
No particular cut, but its very very rare i use it, I would only use it for jump ups really, but then I prefer to use Rabbit back or Pheasant breast.

A lot of pet shops keep frozen mice, DOCs etc for the snake keepers, so if you keep your freezer well stocked, you shoudn't run out. Never use any meat from a supermarket it is full of additives, colours and probably other stuff too. Either use home caught game or Honeybrook.

I believe KKK do organic quail. Re breeding your own, guineapigs do well, (and are good feed value) if you have the grass.

Ok, are you moulting him at the moment?
Was he flown last season? Entered?

Never been flown or entered. Was free lofted with sister.
Yes he's moulting now - been keeping him well fed and weight steady but conscious of ensuring a good varied diet.
