Bought a new Brinsea incubator from Lewis(Hatchitincubators). For next year's breeding. Thought I would have a little practice with some quail eggs. So got 24 eggs sent to me in the post, stuck them in the incubator. Ran the incubator at 37.5.

I put the eggs in on the 23/05/2006. So this morning I stopped the cradle from moving. And noticed that one egg has pipped. So pulled it out and had a little listen and could hear a little squeak. Put the egg back in took the dog for a walk come back and there was my first little quail.

So one down 23 to go. Does anyone else breed quail. This little one makes so much noise it's unbelivable. My dog has not got a clue what's going on at the moment. Look at her here.

It seem's very strange just looked in the incubator and not one of the eggs has pipped.

I suppose not mate, with this weather also thinking about it, just everyone I've seen has a top, with a lone chick its hard to tell if its too hot or cold too.

I had problems trying to hatch in an Oct 20 also the air flow caused the membranes to dry out and the chicks got stuck.

I used a flooded hatchmaker for hatching this year, alot less stressful.

(this was not with Quail eggs mind, after seeing them hatching in a homemade incubator they must be hardy things... )

Yes you could do that, but only if you intended to hatch a small clutch and start again.
Quail hens will keep laying if you remove their eggs so leaving them ends up being counter productive if your intention is to hatch any kind of volume.
Even removing the eggs you need several hens to fill an incubator as the longer they are stored before setting the worse the hatch rates become.

To be perfectly honest with you if you dont have the cash to throw away on an incubator then give breeding Quail a miss completely.

Quail are particularly difficult to rear, need a very high protein diet if you want good growth rates and unless youre doing a few hundred at a time, its cheaper to buy them frozen and defrost to feed to your bird.
Yes a freshly killed Quail may be healthier for your bird (DO NOT FEED A LIVE QUAIL TO YOUR BIRD!!!!!) but if cost is even a slight concern to you I would just give it a miss on a small scale or make a Heath Robinson hatcher and do chickens that will grow on much cheaper foods!!

Just my opinion

Finnish, did you fill the water tray,s on day 16?
quail usualy hatch on day 17 - 18
You should candle on day 10 and throw out the duds,
Up humidity on day 16 and get a hatch on day 17 -18 and a bit beyond.

Hope this helps, cheers Heike

I have a thread on here showing it's perfectly possible and practical to produce one's own quail if done right.

Thanks H. Nice to know someone found it useful.

Followed it pretty much to the letter Matt. Tried with 2 dozen eggs for a start in a Maino incubator, run dry and had 19 live chicks out of the 24.

I breed quial chaps,Bob whites,Japanse and chinese painted hay FINNISH you think your japs are small get some chinese painted mate they are smaller than bumble bees. yappy little things they normal stop making a noise if you ask them to stop nicely:lol:
the humidity in your incubator wants to be between 55-60%
stop turning the eggs two/four days before hatch date with a temperture of 37.2 then wack your humidity up to 70-80% with my golden pheasants i put it up to 90%
anyway GOOD LUCK

hi lee i breed my own its easy cheap you just need a system that works for you m8 i do about 100 a month will try and put some pics of my set up all i have is a 3 hutches 1 brooder 1 incubator and a hatcher.
fill the octogen 20 up you can get about 70-80eggs in one of these at a push run them dry on the auto cradle for 14 days then i put them in a still air hatcher with high humidity and what ever you do dont open the lid i wait from when the first one hatches untill 48 hours later then open it and move them to the brooder you should get around 50 hatch i use wood shavings stops the leg splaying so you should be doing this two times a month.
i only keep 10 hens and two cocks for breeding the rest are killed and fed fresh or frozen.

hi m8, i dont know if this is going to be of much use to you, but ! ill give it a go. are all the eggs that you have purchased been laid on the same day? if so some eggs develope more slowly than others. a lot of things need to be taken into concideration ie humidy, daylight hours etc.

Give us more info on were you got the eggs from m8. Even if all the eggs were laid on the same day the chances are that not all the are gonna hatch on the same day. Believe me m8 in the past ive bred loads of different types of birds from budgies to african greys.
hope this helps m8 and dont be disheartend.

mate i did the same, they were like my wee kids coz i bred them so couldnt kill them so gave them to a friend, i got no probs killing my friends quails and eating them though :D

another thing i found a problem was the little ******s drowning so i use rabbit water bottles for all my quail just show the chicks where it is and they soon master it so then they have fresh clean water all the time

All my battery cages were home made. Nothing was expensive.

I should say here, poultry chick crumbs are NOT nutritious enough for quail.

As this has generated fresh interest, I advise anyone interested to read my article, as this is one of the few things I really do know something about.

You need to feed turkey starter crumbs, which are 30% protein,
Chick crumb is only 18% protein and fed on this, young quail will be a full 2 weeks behind in development after approx 4 weeks

If you want quick growth it needs to be turkey starter or game feed and get as near 30% protein as possible and you wont beleive the diffrence in growth rate.

Works well for me

Cheers Heike
