Dear all,
I'm pretty keen on taking up falconry. It's something that has always fascinated me and I'm now ready to devote some time which I know is essential.
At present I've no hands on experience. I'm thinking of going on a week long falconry course either at the British school of falconry, or the National Birds of Prey Centre. I understand they're both recommended by BFC. Has anyone been to either? Or perhaps enrolled on a falconry course of any sort?
I'm in the middle of reading Emma Ford's Falconry Art & Practice, and L.W Harris's Falconry for Beginners. I'm sure giving myself some theoretical knowledge before enrolling on a falconry course can only be beneficial.
It would be nice to know how others on here started falconry. :D
Bye for now

A course is one of the first steps you can take in falconry, and probably ideal this time of year with few falconers flying their hawks.
Once you have had a taster, join a club or meet some falconers and go out with them in the season to learn fieldcraft (which you wont find on a course).
I started by working at a centre, became very good friend and went out hunting with them. I was priviledged to be taught fieldcraft by a very experienced falconer.

FHF,
Thanks for your swift reply and the good advice. I'll certainly take that on board. Would joining a club..say the BFC for example assist with networking? :P

Hi Esam I won't greet you in Arabic as I can see you don't appear to like it. Incidentally Sandeep lives in Dubai and is a Falconer there so he was not trying to impress you just being polite.
How long will you be based in the UK? I ask this because the way Falconry is practiced in the UK is not the same as it is in the Middle East and I should know as I learnt my Falconry in Bahrain in 1967 and I spend a minimum of one month of the year in the UAE and Qatar with Falconers.
If you want to learn the English way of Falconry then you are makeing the right start by gaining knowledge from books and of obviously a course will also help you. As has been mentioned already try to join a Falconry Club you will learn far more from Falconers in the field than you will learn from a course, I would also sugest that you consider a course with Falconers Emporium, the reason I say this is that Julian can tailor a course to suit your needs rather than a general course, there is not much point in your learning how to deal with Hawks as there is no place for Hawks in Arabian Falconry so you should try to learn about Falcons as this is what you will be hunting with when you return to Bahrain
If you have any further questions please ask and we will try to help
Regards
