Here you go you Merlin fanatics.........small size but the same tone as a Harris bell...it is a BLOODY GOOD BELL!!! I have used a Nickel cuff for it to be a little more hard wearing but a fraction heavier.

Whoever posts a picture of thier Merlin on Lark on this thread gets to try it out for free and give an honest appraisal.

2hours of the best graft I have had on bells so far....thanks for the challenge fellas

Fawkes:

If you look closely I messed up the two halves by not putting the slit at right angles to the cuff.......................

However this has not affected the tone at all......

Ben C
20-06-2006, 05:20 PM
Have now made a thrid pair of Musket bells....these are also for Hawkman69 as the others were just not right in terms of tone....(if your interested) The reason being that the dapper inside was slightly too large and instead of rolling was just sliding down the inside.....

anyway here is the finished article........

Here's a couple of pics of my jack with one of Ben's excellent bells - the tone and finish are excellent - possibly a touch large for a jack - but really super. Apologies for the bewit I was in a hurry to get him belled only to discover I didn't have any tiny cable ties!

Wilfred (and Ben) - no he's not a hunting bird. He actually belongs to the center I work for and he's one of our best demo birds. He regularly hunts during demos, but he usually limits himself to dragonflies  He has however, managed to catch two American robins (much larger than him) - a juvenile on the flying field and an adult through the mesh on his mews!

Ben C
22-06-2006, 06:44 AM
That is very helpful.........the musket bells for a Jack it is then.....and the bigger ones for a Merlin....see what Hawkman69 thinks of the pair I sent on Wednesday.....

I have also sent out a pair of Spar bell and a musket bell to Hybred, so we can see what his reaction is.

Ben C
25-06-2006, 11:11 AM
Hawkman69: You can see exactly what I mean about the fist set being a little on the 'low' side. The reason was not just the dapper but also the type of metals being used!!! Brass only it not right for a good sounding bell.

Wilfred you have PM

I use 1mm brass plate.....No I have only used nickel and brass so far. Why what is the tone like with bronze???? Sounds like a brilliant idea.

Im workin on the Bronze and also trying out different kinds of brass. It will take me a while to get this experiment done, as Im busy with my university work as well these days.

Ben C
29-06-2006, 04:29 PM
I have sourced a place that supplies 1mm bronze sheeting and I am buying some tomorrow and hopefully I'll be trying it out this week. It will be interesting to compare notes.

Turumti
30-06-2006, 12:06 AM
How much does the bronze cost you? Here its 4.5 times the price of brass.

Also do you pound the halves into shape or just press them?

Ben C
30-06-2006, 06:21 AM
The price I have no idea just yet but will find out late to day.......all aspects of my bell making is by hand and hand tools. I use a dremel (small electric sander) but that is it, the process is all hand to eye coordination and paitience. It takes me about 2 hours??? How long do you take Salman?

Ben C
30-06-2006, 07:58 AM
Have a look at this link Salman.

Not very long now, bcos I have now employed a man with more stable hands than mine to make them for me!!!

Having said that, we dont make one pair at at time, we make our in batches of a few dozen, which takes at least a full day. Its very time consuming work, and contrary to popular belief, there is not much money to be made off this trade. It's more a labour of love than anything else.

Keep an eye on the joint of the two halves especially on the Merlin bells. There seems to be a weak point (but only from the same batch) where I have sanded down so they are really flush. As a result not enough solder is going into the joint and they have come apart. It is an easy thing to fix, but pretty **** poor on my behalf, however I did give them all a thorough testing.

Ben,
i have just recieved my bells m8 and i must say you should take a bow!
They are excellent quality and tone.
I think the Nickel and brass have a higher tone than the Nickel and Copper.
1 pair will go on my Female Perexsaker and the others on my Male GyrxSaker.
I will post a pic when they are fitted.
pm me payment details Ben.
Again well done:supz: :supz: :supz:
