I have just taken an intrest in falconry. I am wondering which type of bop to

I would forget about woodpigeon as a main quarry, there too fast for most - occasional kills yes, regular hunting no.

My suggestion would be to thoughly learn the art/practice of falconry before even considering buying a bird.....read books ( there are threads suggesting which are best on theis forum) ask questions on here ( see all paddys !!) or best still find a competant falconer/ austringer who will guide you along...... then think about what bird.....by that point you would probably know woodies fly off at the drop of a pin and are booming fast to boot! pheasies yes!!! Your on the right place to learn ( well most of the time)
Good luck

Forget woodpigeons. They're not suitable as regular quarry for any hawk.
If, as you say, you've, "Just taken an interest in falconry", you really shouldn't be thinking of getting one until you know at least something of what you're doing. Try finding someone in your area and go out with him/her flying, ask lots of questions, then think again about a hawk of your own.

1)first try going to a few centres clubs and fairs with falconry shows!!
2)then find someone willing to teach you the ropes - a course, mentor or club members or by volunteering at centre!
3) then read all the books you can! emma ford, and jemmima perry jones are superb!
4) then check that you:
a) have the land avialable - you will need to ask permission as you probably wont be alowed to use it otherwise and could spoil your chances of good/other land
b) check you have the space in your garden for a suitable mews/aviary - this will need to be a good size, my mews is 7x8foot
c) check you have the time - these birds require daily contact and flying - if you can only afford weekends youll never get the bird flying at its full potential
d) check you have the money - mews/avairy, bird, food, equipemnt, insurance, vets etc etc
e) check you know the basics of falconry - training, first aid, etc
5) then think more seriously about the bird you want to take on!!! as a begginer most will recommend a harris as would i!!!!!

Hiya and welcome! I am attending a falconry course at present that leads to the Lantra Award. Its providing really good info and experience, running for 20weeks in total. Maybe there is something similiar in your area? Just covered species suitability and the top birds for beginners have been recommended as being Common Buzzard, Harris Hawk, Lanner and Red Tail. Lots of fab advice on this site though so don't be afraid to ask more.
