Looking good nice setup... one q whats the drop door? are the pens open frounted and this used to prevent the eyasses from seeing you till they leave the nest? Mike

No pens are secluided ......that avairy specificaly designed for reds ... One opens front window reds investigate the trap door lowered via a pulley for ringing egg collecting or what ever is needed to be done only if required of course...

Nice looking pens mate. My mate Paul used to use a shutter door similar to the one you have there for working with the chicks. One day he was in there checking one of his dodgy knots on the rope, and as he was trying to re-tie it, the door dropped and smacked the parent female as it came over to investigate. Unfortunately she did not survive.

Good Advice ... I am quite happy with my knot tying been confident enough to tie off a ab sail rope ...

but others should be made aware I agree !

Do you have a pygmee slave to clean your aviaries? Or else, how the hell do you sqeeze yourself through that door?

could it be for removal of eggs...placing dummies....and possably putting chics back in....as a screen as such?

well i cant see it does any harm to be there and yes can be used for all that mass states .... But as i said earlier that pen is specificaly for redtails

I have for the last couple of years had a problem with my reds breaking there eggs .. next year i intend to pull as they lay and place under another bird

Also in addition to that I am fed up of going in to the avairy to ring put chicks back etc " armed with a crash helmet ... dust bin lid and baseball bat " ....

and if this works it should be a one man job

But of course if anyone has a real problem with my Trap door they are welcome to come and ring my redtails chicks for me next year :-D :-D

The smaller the door the smaller the chance of a mishap !

well thats my reasoning anyway

I also have this type of door on my mews for the same reasons and also to put an extra obstacle in the way of potential hawk thieves, it works very well for me  Probably best to avoid if you have a dodgy back

when i went in to catch my mates reds up i had a crash helmet 2 hunting coats 2 gloves on and a bin lid and she still nailed me in the foot (through a leather boot ) and on the back off the leg and iam silly enough to take them on this year for a breeding project (i must be stark raving bonkas)
