Was curious on peoples opinion of how long you should be in Falconry for before getting your 1st bop?

As long as it takes to be confident on your own and build up a network of phd falconry friends :)

how long should you be interested in falconry i think it was supposed to read i.e. how long should you spend researching, getting involved with others etc before you take the plunge and get one yourself - you dont have to have a bop to be in falconry!
id say long enought to be confident about what you are oing -training handling feeding etc

Do you need to have one to be a Falconer

lol yes cos a falconer flys falconry lol! but to be into the sport you just need a centre, people to go out hunting with and an interest in the sport!

Ok I would say this person has a passing interest in Falconry and enjoys watching other peoples hawks fly.
I read sometime ago about proposed titles... Raptor keepers would be called Falconers and "Falconers" i.e those that hunt quarry in its natural state with a trained bird or prey would be called Field-Falconers...
To me to be 'in Falconry' you must be a Falconer.
Otherwise I could say I'm in the World Cup as I watch England on the T.V?
Going back to the original question... as has been said... when you're ready no one can give an exact timescale, person A might take 3 years to pick up what person B does in 2 months.

Not me,my first kestrel used to sit on the washing line pole, waiting for my mom to go to work so I could wag it and get back, used to knick my sisters mitten as a glove, was once worried that it needed some fluid, tried it with a plum, its first flight was on a creance, hanging in the wind like a kite!!!!How lucky these beginners are now!!! A s mentioned on another thread because you dont own a bop doesnt mean your not a Falconer/austringer. I fly them, train, hunt and feed them. So i think/know i am a Falconer. Not a greatly experienced one but one all the same. And the end of the day its a question that i asked and im getting bad rep for it!

Well what do u expect it is a poor question,
question to u have u trained a Falcon from start to finish and caught game regular with one? if not i don't see how u can call urself a Falconer,
Or maybe u have trained a Hawk (generalised term for gos, spar, red,HH) from start to finish and caught game regular with it, if not ur not a austringer!
I love how ppl say i'm this and that but in all fairness seems to me u just handle BOP at a centre, thats nothing to do with Falconry!

Falcon we dont hunt with. TRAIN FLY YES( this i believe is what makes up alot of Falconry.Trained hhs and a rt. It would be a bit pointles calling myself a Falconer/austringer if all i did was coo over them. I know what is classed in the catagory of Hawks hence why the rts in there. And yes now i am rather peed off:twisted:

I love the fact ppl say and make this history for them selves saying i am this that and the other.
Just for ur info Buzzbee i used to be a Falconer, i flew a peregrine.
I am a austringer at the moment though,

It may not make him a better falconer in the long haul,it will give him a better start,he obviously knows how to retrieve a bating hawk to the glove(Fresh hawk)turn the hand downwards absorbing the bate, how much jess to give,he may even have learnt how to hood a falcon, swing a lure for persuit falcons etc etc,a good start in my book for the aspiring to be...... Just trained a mrt now hunts rabbit. Retrained a mhh hunts pheasant and maggy. Training a Barn owl and a eeo at the moment. The barn just being flown without a creance and hovering over mouse lure. Eeo flying 15ft to glove on a creance. What standard was your pere up to?

A better start to do what? most of what u have explained in my book won't give any better a start i presume u mean a BOP could and would be trained quicker! Does that really make a difference and if so what birds does that apply to?

Are you all the ticket?Whats the first thing you do when aquiring a fresh hawk/falcon!Sir you say you were a falconer and flew a peregrine, may I ask at what quarry?Yes it does make a difference how long it takes to train a young falcon, you do not want to miss your window of natural oppertunity! LOL, u really think that any peregrine u get and train in the correct time leaving u open to ur window of natural oppurtunity will catch corvids!!!! Give me a break i have trained a few Peregrines no matter how well u train it if it aint in the birds breeding or bloodlines it aint gonna catch crows etc.
Oh and to ur question what is the first thing i do when i get a new hawk/falcon why fit its anklets, bells and tail mount, don't u?
Now i ask u oh great one u tell me what u think, and no HH not being Falconry does not come in to it.

Was curious on peoples opinion of how long you should be in Falconry for before getting your 1st bop?
your question is clear enough, if you don't feel the need to nit pick
i was very lucky when i started out
my mentor arranged for me, a loaned fhh to train and fly
i ended up flying/hunting her for two seasons
on my third season i flew a rescued mrt
as you can imagine i felt more than confident, when i got my own fhh
ive flown her for the past five seasons and hope to fly her and her offspring for many more to come
i don't think i could have had a better start than that
in answer to your question, a full season atleast with a mentor and hands on
experience (that preferably would mean housing the bird yourself as well)
it worked for me
hope this is the kind of response you were looking for
all the best matty
