For a RT, i would get one that goes all the way up the arm, over the shoulder and covers the face completely

I have a ben long glove ( from before his relaunch) and the fit couldnt be better.... must be over 15 yrs and has seen better days. I would recommend this for fit and still use it !!. also have a martin jones .... fit isnt so good but the leather quality is A1. This must be 10 yrs old and still going strong it has a 'd' ring but is very dangling I have often been tempted to remove it. Both are double thickness & buckskin ...flexible but very claw resistant..... gloves are a personal thing shame you could have got one at the falconers fair then you could have tried them on. May be worth sending an outline of your hand to the chosen maker to get thet bespoke fit,

I tried to make a few which were fun to make but not up to professional standard and the leather etc cost close to £20 per glove....wont be in a rush to do that again!!!!

Martin Jones gloves are hard to beat IMHO, very well made and will last an age if looked after. I'm sure they'll be able to sort you out with a female redtail proof glove:lol:

Wouldn't use anything but Falconcrest personally. Very supple, great fit and tough enough for any hawk.

Falconcrest is indeed considered to be a very good quality glove. But....i myself would not get it anymore. I did buy one and it is just that the thickness of the leather dissapointed me. As being too thick. Something that might be very ok with a goshawk, but i just do not like it for falcons. For them I would prefer any other glove i have from less thick leather.

Dont bother they fall apart, granted we handle more birds than most on a daily basis but I had a whitbacked vulture bite right through one and our eagle owls just puncture them, even the small gloves that he makes get recked by our barnowls in about 6 months.

Buy somthing that has been hand stitched then you wont get a nasty talon trought the seam

Hmm most of the green gloves are cheap chinese/ pakistani/ indian/ eurasian copies/imports of our gloves, If they have strong cast brass dees they are ours ( we sell to the trade too) if they ahve pressed dees that can be 'pulled' apart they are not ! HTH

What I would like to know is why so many suppliers sell "double overlayed" gloves that have single thickness fourchets  (Between the fingers)

The most vulnerable points on a glove are these parts and they are left single thickness

I like the overlayed Doug Pineo "Pendleton gloves" .....No fourchets :supz:
(Im currently prefecting a pattern)

Also, as has been pointed out by another Goshawker...You dont look like Robin Hood when wearing one :supz:

Yes quite true Tim, I can always make gloves with a double fourchette on 1st & 2nd finger, however if the leather is left full thickness( and not skived / thinned out) it makes the glove really difficult to bend the fingers. I have to say with a premium buckskin( not buck tanned cow hide, normal deer skin, Nubuck( split cow hide) or even top grain cowhide gloves) Really having an overlay for most Accips & certainly all Buteos ( with exception of TR's and possibly Female Gosses( although I used a single thickness glove for years without any probs!) quite frankly is overdoing it somewhat . It is a bit like people phone me up demanding 1- 2 mm thick kangaroo jesses/ jesse leather for harrises etc . Until the late 90's kangaroo was as rare as hen's teeth and there fore we used to use calf skin/ pig skin etc which was perfectly adequate except for teh fact that we had to use approx 1 ~ 1.5 mm leather now folk require the same from jesses.( again i prefer to use as light a quality leather and as little of it on my falcons if that all makes sense) HTH

Makes perfect sense Julian.
I have been experimenting with glove leathers for a while now.
What I found odd in the beginning was that it is harder to push a needle through two pieces of thinned down leather than one original as tanned piece of the same stuff, even thought the thickness of the two pieces is less than the thickness of the original

I suppose its because there are two dense layers as opposed to one dense layer and a load of "chaff" if that makes sense

For FRT go for the orange gloves from the czec. rep. - ace! Subtle enough but if they do decide to punch - you got nothing to worry about!

I liked Ben long gloves, but yeah - they did fall apart. Most of the newer ones arnt made in this country apparently and do fall apart quickly if youre unlucky. My D ring came off within a week.

Martin jones are ace :supz: - yeah they're bright but easy for the birds to see. Comfy, smart, looks nice and easy to clean! Dunk em in warm water, stick on em your hand for a few minsstrait away they every couple mins back on hand and move about and they soon become good as new. Theyre so good i got the full set nearly - from single to eagle overlay. Aint got the money for the eagle lol :(

I reserve Julian's gloves till i can get hold of one and they it out. They sound good, quite comfy the ones I did try on.

falconcrest cant beat them very well made last for years,at the end of the day if a female red wants to there aint much that will stop her talons going through.

I'm having a hard time making a decision on this one! its looking like Ben's or originals.

Might have to settle for what i get now, as my boiler (not the wife!) packed up yesterday! Wife has bent door back on the car damaging wing (high winds the other day) and the other car says it needs an inspection and is stalling so no luck at the moment! :toimonst:

I myself did order some 2-finger glove from the following site today:

www.americanfalconer.com

I think his normal 5 finger gauntlets also look great. The 2 finger..well..looks bit thin maybe..but i think it might be a great one in fact. But have to wait to receive it now first before i could tell.

sorry..i have to look through this tread again then maybe..but what are the reasons why this gloves I mentioned (i suppose you mean them) are good gloves just like the "pendleton"??

fact is the gloves at americanfalconer just look similar to a glove I already have. Nice thin. My absolute favourite glove.

Not much, about £16.50.

I used them for the last 3 seasons for the male gos and spar - their very good, nice and lightweight providing a good fit without being sweaty, now use the double thickness gauntlet for the female gos - she went straight through the pendleton

that what i thought but a gos has same if not more force

Gos has slighlty less if not the same force of grip but is more geared to pierceing whereas a Red has feet more inclined to crushing while piercing to a lesser degree if that makes sense.

Either way the destination is painville

Im sure the double thickness version would be fine for a Red
