View Full Version : Help with Larsen Traps

Some weeks ago I bought a larsen trap and assumed crows and magpies would just throw themselves into it. I have loads of both in the area I live in and have tried placing eggs, DOC, bread etc into the trap. So far I have not even had the food placed on the top of the trap touched by anything other than badgers.
What advice can you give me. I want to feed my breeding hawks the odd corvid (humanely killed) so that next year the chicks know what to look for before we start training.
Thanks in advance.

Hi John,
You'll need a call bird, a magpie in the Larsen which will attract magpies into the trap.

even with a call bird its harder this time of year to catch them in any large numbers. if you can find a local gamekeeper they usually have a call bird they will give you until you get a call bird its uphill i'm afraid.:yawinkle:

Another thing to try is to make a rough nest in one of the catch compartments and put the eggs-unbroken in to the fake nest.
I think someone on here told me about that method and it worked for me within a few days. After you have the first call bird. the rest will soon follow! :-)

May be to late in the year, but when territories are being argued over, a mirror in the trap will often work on magpies, if you have not got a call bird.

Next best thing to a call bird is a rabbit carcase with the guts hanging out

Making one appears to be easy but when you get down to it the material, time and effort is not worth it. I got mine off ebay.

Sometimes you know we all live in our own little worlds. I should have asked around before I did anything. I knew you needed a calling bird but the problem was "first catch your calling bird", there are crows and magpies all over the place down here but they are not suicidal. Only a week or so ago there were some young crows on the lane if I'd been quick I bet I could have caught one in a landing net. Never mind time will tell.
Chicks are doing well, branching at the moment.
See you Wednesday.
Well done For winning the quiz.

Well done attracting Badgers.
You must be doing something right to have Badgers check it out.

The problems I've had using a Magpie from the same area is the Magpies dont try and mob it so they dont get caught, you'll probably find that the Magpie from a new area will cease to work eventually as they stop mobbing it.
The keys rotation, speak nicely to the local keepers
See you Wednesday,
P.S. I know others haven't had this problem from other posts, but its been my experience with Larsen Traps and Magpies.

If there are any sheep being fed meal in your area set your traps close by
use the same meal you won't need a decoy. Jackdaw and magpie are easy caught this way and you'll need to check the traps twice a day

Would you believe it./ My larsen trap has been set up now for several weeks without even having any food placed into it. last night I had a couple of DOC's left over and simply threw them into the trap just to see what might happen. Hey Presto this morning I had caught my first crow. Its now safely in the holding compartment and being well fed and watered and waiting for company to arrive later in the day.
Lets hope I get many more.
