View Full Version : Looking for a 4X4

Ok, in a couple of months I am going to be in the market for a 4x4, originaly I was going to get a Discovery, but after having a good chat yesterday with a friend who owns one, he said that although he hasn't had many problems with his, he wouldn't buy another one as it can be a bit hit or miss. He recommended an Isuzu Trooper as apparently they are extremely reliable. Anybody got one or know anything about them?
Also this is the spec I need for a 4X4 so feel free to make other suggestions.
5 door, LWB, Diesel (GOOD ECONOMY) leather, aircon, elec windows, 7 seats would be usefull, cheap to maintain! and with a budget of around 7K tops. Also needs to have a bit of comfy inside to keep the sparring partner happy!

PMSL
If you dont like the import Shoguns (which i can understand) buy a UK one.
Mines the 2.8 (being a UK car) and I get around 25-30 MPG, and I have a heavy right foot.
Great off road as you can see... :supz:

That look much better! and she does seem to cope with those sand ripples quiet well to
Economy is the big thing, but then if I was that worried I would buy a smart car  But I have to get more than the 18 to the Gallon that I get from my Beemer. I may even consider an LPG Conversion.

Have a look at a Toyota Hilux Surf!
http://www.yotasurf.co.uk/
Go for a 3rd Gen 3.0 TD, I get 30mpg out of mine, best motor I've had and would not hesitate at having another. No problem with parts and you get a lot of motor for your money.
Cheers

You'll beat that with a diesel... If you converted a petrol car, would the cost of convertion save you anything in the long run?

Get a defender 110. Without a doubt an all rounder. I have one you can still get all the other bits you just pay less for your car and change it to your speck.
I am working on mine at the mo when finished will be smart leather interior, front and back high back seats, tinted rear windows, side runners and flip paint (still deciding on colours) to make it abit more girly but loads of room for birds, dogs and kids 11 seater. The after sales market for these are amazing so you make the limits.
Just past its mot need a pipe welding £75 not bad for 16yrs old.
I have to put my hand up and say I am biased as I love landies and have wanted one all my life since I was a little girl. I  them.

How about a Tata Safari................................not many about, Indian made, big, luxurious (leather interior, a/c etc. £15k new.
A lot of car for the money; a tad under-powered only being 2l but I've never got stuck and infact I've towed my mates Defender before now. On average I get between 3-400 on a fill up, (hold 60l, usually refil with 45l).
dealers in your area http://www.tatasales.com/tata_GB_en/static/node11831.html
They also do pick-ups. You should get a good 2nd hand one for £7k. possibly even an 02.
the box in the back is a 2' cube that I occaisionally use for the birds.

have you considered a subaru forester or legacy outback. more like an estate to look at but quality cars. superb handling and depending on engine size, good mph.
look on e-bay for any car- good bargains to be had.with 7g you could find almost anything.

iam driving a 3.1 td trooper at the moment it seems to be very realiable nice to drive and pretty good off road between 25+30 to the gallon.i had a 2.5 tdi discovery before the trooper and to be honest id rather have the trooper.
ps with 7k you would get a cracker but stay away from the 3.0 troopers iv heard the engine are not to good. the 3.1 engine is far better hope this helps KEV. ;-)

I have had a few 4x4`s in my time including a 3.1td Trooper but to get 30mpg out of it you would have to be rolling down a hill with the keys out of it.
You will not get good consumption from any of the large 4x4`s as it is physically impossible to propel a large, heavy 4x4 with the aerodynamics of a brick through the air on a thimble of juice.
You will average 25mpg with most of the 2.2 -2.8 diesel brigade and the downwards with anything larger.
We drove a 4.2ltr landcruiser to Cologne many a time and would only get about 18mpg, disco`s 25-28 and Range rovers about 14-18mpg.
The question is do you really need a full blown capable 4x4 or something that has 4x4 capability when the going gets a bit muddy?
As said earlier Subaru make good motors, diesel Freelanders, do not touch a petrol one with a barge pole.
The choice is yours, pick wisely!

At least with that shogun you will have plenty of change.
i am in the motortrade and have sold these vehicles for years.
i would not buy a 3.0 trooper and at that money i would opt for a 2.8 shogun or idealy a 3.0 diesel landcruiser colorado! and with all of them if you get 22mpg you will be doing well. its only the disco that really gets better fuel consomption. they are also a lot cheaper to maintain.

I currently run a an old 3.9 V8 Range Rover which I had converted to LPG
which costs me 0.41p per litre on a run I can average 28 miles per Gallon.I have had it for four years and only had to replaced a Battery, it is very easy to service with minimum of tools.

INTERESTING SOME OF THE MILEAGE QUOTES, DISCOS 25-28 OOops!
that must be cross country? mine has just over 200,000 miles on it and i thought i was getting around 33-35 mpg turns out its nearer 38 mpg :supz:
thats doing between 60 and 65mph on a good run.
some may say thats too slow, but the main reason for a 4wd off roader is not speed.

Off road an auto is a better gearbox if used correctly, ie selecting 1st lock up for downhill descents.
We always used auto`s in the racers, more reliable, kept your hands on the wheel, usefull at approx speeds of up to a 100mph off road!
When driving through rivers or other standing water you will not stall if you hit a submerged object which in turn could lead to hydraulicking the engine with water.
Very expensive.

I have to disagree with the landy comment steve, I personally think they start with a box, then sharpen up the corners to make it a bit boxier then stick a wheel on each corner and a landrover badge on the back
I do agree that they do the job though, but I ain't gonna be climbing mountains in my shogun, as I don't own a Falcon

oh, well in that case the newer ones are quiet nice but still lack that certain something in my opinion, maybe its because they haven't really changed the design in around 20 years. But they do still manage to look classy to be fair.
