Personally I'd get my hearing checked first - I say this as I cant hear high tones due to having ear infections as a child.

If your hearing is fine - try boiling them!!

I haven't tried to boil them, but I guess it does the same thing...I heat the bells in the over until they are just turning red and them let them cool off. This is called anealing the metal. It makes it harder and can sometimes bring back the tone. I'm not quite sure why the bells lost their tone just sitting their though?

Maybe its just the way the ringing bit is hitting the inside. I shall explain myself. I had a pair of new bells and when I got them they sounded ok but the guy said to give them some time and they would sound better and they did it was the polish that he used to clean the bell would go inside and deaden the bell until all the polish was kind of shook out maybe it is hitting on a point where it is still coated with polish ??? Just an idea or maybe something has made them wet and they have a coating of gunge on the inside give them a really good shake for awhile and see if that helps or they might have a small crack you can't see from something in the draw.

Probrably gone a bit tarnished inside, use them and the tone may come back once they are clean.Got some from the falconry fair and they were a bit dull sounding, the guy from Falconforms said they will get better once the inside is clean and they have.
Stand there shaking them for a couple of days LOL.

Could you not soak them in methylated spirit or something to maybe remove any film that has built up inside?

The best thing we have fount for cleaning our bells when we make them is SILIT BANG! only leave them in for a couple of mins at the most! you will see them change color, dont wory this is the acid eating away at the metal... give them a wash under the tap and then buff them back up with brasso....

I had a similar problem FHF when I was younger which made me deaf in my left ear, it can be hard in the field to hear bells especially when there is a bit of wind.

Cheers Joe

Joe - I have found that lahore bells are the correct tones for my hearing and I try to buy bells with a similar tone (if I want them to last longer than a season!). Most of the american ones are too high for my hearing.
