Your lucky it didnt jump into your hair as they often do it makes your skin crawl as it can take an age to track the little effers down as they hide in your hair and are also quite hard to kill.

I don't think we have them around here but back in Virginia my racing pigeons would get them on occasion. They are fast!!!! Got one on me once, it ran all over until it decided I wasn't such a nice host and left. Sort of breaks up the day with a little excitement:wink:

I don't know if we have the same species, but we do have flat flies (hippoboscid flies) around here (Minnesota, anyways). They are nasty critters. We spray all our freshtrapped redtails. There's nothing more disgusting than watching them crawl around on the bird, then buzz over and start crawling down your shirt:vom:

You reminded me of what happened to a friend's dad when he was a kid. They were driving down the interstate when Wally's dad started swatting at his crotch. His dad pulls off the road and begins to scream and swat some more at his crotch. Then he exits his car and in front of God and everyone drops his pants. Wally is laughing so hard he cant' hardly breathe. Then he sees the reason for his dad's wierd behavior. A wasp fell out of his underwear. So I'll take a flat fly any day over a wasp crawling around in my drawers.
Did he get stung! ( didnt know Forbes"y was on the interstate:D hahahahahaha)...bet he felt a *****

I know one thing..... the sudden bate.... for no apparent reason has stopped since I sprayed him and got rid of the little fekker. Maybe its was the feeling of getting munched by that damn fly that was causing it?

I believe Wally said his dad did indeed got stung. When I asked where he said or implied right on the head of his winkie. Of course I had tears streaming down the side of my face and was trying to keep my voice professional while talking on one of the radios.

Damn... reading this thread is making me itch all over  ...... I'm with griff on this one....THEY ALL MUST DIE!
I caught one put it under a glass & sprayed it with Johnsons "Anti Mite" it was still alive the next day. I also found an egg underneath the birds perch. It was black about the size of a glass bead or a No6 shot & under a microscope on low power looked like something HR Geiger might have conceived

all you need is a quick spray under each wing and your bird wont have anything that itches and bites, I hate bugs lol

A flat fly came off an imprint gyr/saker while we were putting anklets on this morning. It landed on my wifes back. I was very calm. Much more calm than if it had landed on me! I told my wife I would have to spray it. She insisted I use the Johnsons instead of the wasp killer I had reached for, what a waste.
It flew off and appeared later on a window. Got it with the wasp spray this time.
I dont know where it came from. I only feed defrosted wood pigeon. Can these flies survive freezing?
The falcon has been running/flapping around the garden for a couple of weeks and the place is crawling with wild birds this year. Even had a greater spotted wood pecker drop in today.

Flat flies will fly around looking for a host on which to suck blood and they are host specific.

We routinely use Johnsons Antimite on the wild birds that are brought to us. Kills the mites fast and flat flies bail out immediately - usually onto whoever's holding the bird.
What I really can't stand is watching the little ******s running around under the feathers. You don't see the fly, just a bulge moving over the bird's body like something out of a sci-fi movie. Always looks worse on kestrels for some reason.
