Hi,

Everyone says it is best to start with a mail HH but looking on some falconry sites they suggest a Lanner falcon? Does anyone have a Lanner, if so would it be better for me to get one of those for a 1st BoP?

Stacey,

The hawk or falcon you start with will be dictated by what sort of mentor you have, the land you have available and the time you have available.

Many people will say to start with a hawk such as a harris or a redtail, but if you have the land for a falcon and an experienced longwinger on hand, then you could start with a longwing.

Harrises and redtails have a reputation for being 'beginner proof', they can take the mistakes a beginner may make in their stride and still turn out to be good hunting birds. Other species may not be so forgiving.

Essentially the questions you need to ask yourself (not anyone else) are:

- What land do I have available?
- What help do I have on hand?
- What time do I have available?
- What do I want to fly for the next 10-20 years?

The answers to these questions may help you out in your final choice!

Im at home 5 days a week so i have plenty of time on my hands!! Luckily, we know lots of people who own farms/land which include fields, woodland etc. We are also planning to move to France in a few years where we have 23 acres of woodland and fields. I am still trying to find out if i would be able to take a BoP with me or if i would hav to wait until i am in France to get one!

As for help, none as yet and i am still on the lookout for a mentor!

With regards to france - I think you will find that the regulations are rather dense, but it is possible - do a search for l'association du fauconnerie

With regards to your current situation, once you have had the opportunity to go out with some falconers and do your course you will be in a better position to make a choice.

I think you have take into consideration what you want to fly in the future, the last thing you want to do is get a bird you don't want.
