I just went out to feed and fly Oak, and found a chewed primary feather on the floor of his aviary, it was snapped in 2 and well chewed up, now bearing in mind he isn't being moulted, and is at a low weight, I started wondering why he has dropped a feather? Also when I flew him, he is still feather perfect! I even counted all his primaries and they are all intact, Where the hell could it have come from? I was wondering if he has had a visit from a wild buzzard and they have had a bit of a tussle through the mesh! anyone got any ideas or suggestions as i'M BAFFLED

unless the local buzzard has paid a visit, and one has dropped throught the roof of the mews it is quite possible as it is most likely still moulting H and trying to have a pop at urs, they must see it as a threat and try and scare it away they are territorial as you no so oak is a threat to them in there eyes m8

Yes I think you may be right, There are a lot of Buzzards around here, but to be honest, they usualy just soar over, turn back for a look then fly off. But I can't think of any other explanation. This is a main Primary, and I've checked both his wings and they're intact! I guess it could have blown in? but it sure as hell has baffled me

yea but harris said it was chewed up so perhaps less able to identify? have you still got it perhaps posting a photo of it may help?
with th elonger days, even at flyign weight, he can still drop feathers, are you sure you counted them all right? and compare the feather to his other feathers, should be quite easy to reconise.

Yes I can, But as my Harris hasn't yet arrived, I doubt theres any Harris feathers around here! It was definately a Buzzards, and one of the larger primaries.
just released, forgot it was a buzzard you had. need a slap to wake me up lol

 No worries Sean, I've been back out and got one of my kids to hold his wings open, we both counted his primaries back as far as we could, and there is the same on each wing with no gaps!! It must have blown in, the colour is the same, but with the varying colours in his wings, it could be from anywhere. still one hell of a coincidence tho if it has blown in

If you are certain the bird has dropped nothing then a visit from a wild cousin is the likley source

While on his running bar here ,oak would often call wild buzzards down, particulary in the summer, but not enough space for them to land here, he was also flown right thro the summer and would moult as normal, although more slowly, and unless you get them quickly,, loves nothing more than trashing his own dropped feathers!!! my eagle is the same! thankfully he realy looks after himself so never needed them for imping..
