Hello to all, my name is Jon from Fife in Scotland, I am new to this forum and to falconry, I have admired birds of prey for years but only from afar I never thoght I could get near them never mind owning one. Until I was intrduced to an experienced falconier, who set me straight on the rights and wrongs of the sport.
I am due to get my first bird in early August a female Harris hawk, allthough I have built an avairy / quarters in the back garden I intend to keep the bird at a freinds untill shes ready to moult.
I would be gratefull for any tips or hints on the subject from experienced or rookies alike. Jon

Jon,
Welcome to the forum. I take it this bird is a second hand bird. It should already be molting, and almost done. Are you planning on hunting her this fall?

Thanks for the reply Greg, the bird is only 12 weeks old (parent reared), I was due to pick the bird up this Friday,( 5th Aug) but the breeder informed me that she was still screaming and may be a couple of weeks yet. Is this a common thing with Harris hawks I don't know what to expect. Jon

Hey Jon,

If you bird is only 12 weeks old, you are going to have a long wait until her first molt! She won't molt until next year. It sounds to me like you need to get together with your experienced falconer friend and have him set you straight on what to expect this year with this bird and how to go about it. And of course, you can ask as many questions on here as you want. You will great advice here.

Happy Hawking,
Fred

Now I got ya Jon. You are talking about Hard Penning or Hard summed. This is when the bird is finnished growing in it's first set of feathers and they are not in blood anymore. Your bird should be hard penned at about 60-65 days. So at 12 weeks she should be ready to be worked with.

Hey Jon,

Greg already answered this, but I just wanted to add that it really would be good for you to get with your experienced falconer friend and kind of make up a schedule of what he thinks you should do and the steps to doing it, etc. Just going and picking up the bird without not knowing what to do or what to expect would not be good. You are going to have a blast!

I have never had a Harris Hawk (red-tails, kestrels, coops, red-shoulder, but no Harris's yet), but I might get one next year. They are great first birds, hell, they are great birds period. Keep us informed on your every step and definately take pictures and post them. And good luck!

John she will not lose any feathers untill she start's to moult next year and this will only be when you put her down to moult and start to lift her weight up to her fat weight. Around the end of Fed or Mar.
All you have to worry about the now is getting her manned and flying free then catching those Bunnys:supz: .
