Whatever length is better for the bird in question.

Depends on the hawk and preference.

for falcons they should never be to long or they will sooner or later straddle the block?

Again, depends. Not too long, not to short for me. aslong as they arent to short to get into safety - no complaints lol. Too long and if the bird is footy you got a problem. For me, i use my palm then an extra 3" for the harris and falcons.

hi paddy,
to be honnest this was one of the first questions i asked when i was preparing for my first bird, some one will tell you a standard length for flying and field jesses, but at the end of the day it boils down to how you comfortably hold you'r bird, when i'm indoors with my harris and she settles down to watch corrie she likes to lift one leg, i soon found out that because i have a large hand i needed a longer length to allow her to lift her leg and still keep her secure, in the field you can gow quite short as the bird hopefully won't be settled enough to lift a leg and snooze, and so the jesses,in my case anyway can be secured between the first and second finger, with a bit of thaught you can make you're jesses to fit you're hand and the type of bird that you have.

I would say to try to keep field jesses fairly short so that they cant wrap around branches but other than that its personal preference

mews jesses should sit so the swivel is under the the bottom of the hawks tail, meaning if it bates the swivel wont be dragged up through the tail- dont remember who tought me that one ;-)
I like my flying jesses as short and stiff as poss

I think what Adam means is that mews jesses should be cut at a length so that when the swivel is in position the hawks tailfeathers can not thread through either the swivel or into the trap formed by the attatched jesses.
The result of this requirement failing to be met is known to all and first shows itself as a bad impersonation of a Red Kite

Which makes for freakin' short jesses on a sharpie...very hard to hang on to, but better than the swallow tail.

make your field jesses nice and long, then pick your bird up with them on.
hold the jess in the safety position (into the palm between thumb and forefinger then between the middle and ring finger with an inch to spare)
more than an inch sticking out?
shorten em!
mews jess, same thing but perhaps with a couple of inches sticking out of the back of the hand
.
theres no hard and fast rules but this method seems to make sense to me

here on the forum , some time ago, someone advised whetting and twisting ,cord wise, to close the jess along it's length ,,
tried it .. it works ..

hi paddy. i bought mews and field jesses for a f hh from ben long.
field jess- 10 inch long
mews jess 8.5 inch long.
these measurments are after you have folded them to form the 'button' at the end
both are half inch wide.hope this helps.
the guy who i am buying the f hh from thinks they are a bit to long. the guy who will be helping me fly it thinks they are a bit short! each to their own.
before anyone has a go i also bought some leather to make my own. i just bought them to have a 'template' to work from!
