View Full Version : competition flying
i used to match fish, i used to race pigeons,i've raced farrets, terriers and lurchers, what a great day out, my point is this, at a field meet could you not have a competition of sorts, 10 people turn up (lets say) 5 agree to hunt on the morning (4 hours lets say) the other five pair up and become judges, you sinchronise watches and agree to start hunting at a certain time,at that you wander off on you're own with you're bird followed closely by you're judge after 4hours hunting you return to the meeting spot, the judge will then confirm at what time you caught any game and the amount of game, lets say the quickest kill gets ?points the biggest kill (in proportion to the hunter) gets ?points the most kills (the bag agreed before the off) gets ? points, lunch then the second group are out with the first now the judges, would this with some refinements make for a more interesting field meet, just a thaught.

some poor bugger has to stay behind all day and look after the 4 birds that ain't being hunted :(
as i said some refinements needed, but i still think there's a chance of making meets a bit more interesting.

I guess each to their own but I think that for the majority of falconers( used in the broad sence) this would not be why they took up the interest. It would certainly bring it to the publics attention but probably in a negative way. I,for one, would like to see the competitive edge kept out of falconry.
Could be an interesting thread....if people give their true feelings!

It would never be a fair competition. You can't control what game you will find, if any. You can't control the slip, or anything else. It would never be an even playing field for the 'contestants'.

It depends on what flicks your switch. obviously it will not be for all, personally not for me, similarly could think of nothing worse then going match fishing on a canal.
but thinking about it....would make for an awesome spectator sport. Just think all the hawks bought to a meet should be up to competition spec...hmmm?

Personaly i dont like the idea. To be it sounds like youd be pushin your bird to much to get better/quarry and wouldnt the antis love the arguements that might arisefrom it. Me personaly am happy when the bird im flying catchs a mouse as its still a kill/chase/exercise.

good point but then again.....fishing? is that a 'fair' competition. or coursing ? Doent stop people doing it ( well something else stopped coursing and I fear if there were falconry competitons in GB then it would go the same way)
What about sky trials???? (abroad)
When we go a duckin, believe me,we are all in competition with each other,we just keep it in our own heads, till the beer starts to flow that is!!!!Then the truth sirem brings out the fun!!!!Love the sky trials here, just for the trophy<G>

And there was me worrying about the state of falconry today. I should have realised it was an unneccessary concern!

No 2 slips are the same so would be hard to judge. It could work if you used a dummy bunny in the same place and try each bird on each diff one and make them harder and judge on tht but its the fact you have to get each one the same
