Two friends of mine in Madrid sent me these photos of the two cheetahs owned by a Spanish guy they know, both are hand reared but breed naturally. He hunts hare with them and produces a few young from time to time; I will have to get out there to see this at first hand.

Top action pictures Chris! Read an old article about it some time ago. They were using hoods and blood only rewards to keep them in running condition.

Interesting, seems abit unfair letting 2 off at a hair, hardly sporting considering they're the fastest land mammal lol, and i wouldnt want to put up with 1 that carrys
I heard something a while ago saying when theyre running they spend more time in the air than on the ground, so theyre effectivly flying
Obviously not flying in effect but you get the idea

Hi Chris
If he is after a hood for them.... I beleive that Ken Hooke has a pattern for them and can make them.

From what i understand the hood my other friend uses came from Roger Upton, the guy with the pair/cast/brace.. sees no need for hooding.
His house is surrounded by a large fenced area, the cats spend most of thier time there when not out for a run. He has a sunken bath next to a big window in the side of the house so he can lay and soke while watching his Cheetahs, what a life!

Hi Chris
I have read a little on the subject (that I could find) and in India they hooded the Cheetah's whilst travelling and also on slips where more than one cheetah was on the field as far I could make out. It would be interesting to see the pattern close up .... but all I have is "long Shot" pics of a hooded Cheetah :(
I have coursed hares for a long time with long dogs..... but a Cheetah in full flight must be a spectacle!

Griff,
From what i have read, most of the Cheetahs used were from the wild so I suppose there was a need to hood them. but as most of the few kept now are imprints if you like, the need is lesser.
I hope to see these cats run next year, too much to do this year to go, it has to be something else. Needless to say, I will be taking my video camera.:supz:

There was at one time some talk of running the Waterloo cup (or a pale shadow of it) using Cheetahs, since logically the Hunting with Dogs Act does not apply to Cats.

ie seen trained ones fist hand chase a plastic bag on a rope and a pully they are incredibly fast but i still think a hare in open ground would be a challnge if the slip was far enough as they cant run more that 300 or so metres before they run out of stem
like the hood idea it has been around for centuries in inda i think or northern africa:supz:

Slight problem that the cheetah comes under DWA licenceing. It is illegal to free exercise any species covered by DWA.

i heard about a guy in fife who was coursing hares with a "cast" of male cheetahs, presumebly before the DWA act came into play. what the hare lacks in speed it makes up for in manouverability, which the cheetah lacks at high speed, hence, two of them is needed for it to be sporting for the cheetahs point of view!
Chris,I met a fella out there last year who was manning a cast of cheetahs, did,nt get to see them run,he also used a mask!He would,nt have a problem with land on the outskirts of Alicante, his father is the major!!!

Whats the DWA?
If it is the dangerous animal act, then no one should be able to have pitbulls free as they come under it

Hey up Dean how is it going mate? Yes the land around most of Spain is amazing, as you know we did the Leon sky trials and the Saville trials as well. Spent a few days south of Madrid in Red leg city, never seen so many patridge.
Unfortunatly I did not get to see the cheetahs but hope to next time.

I have the tiger training video and also the Craigheads documentary about falconry and cheetah coursing in India.
The latter has been converted from projector film to CD/DVD so the image quality and sound are not outtanding, but itts still an eye opener. The tiger one I recorded from TV, so there are a few ads in it, but I can get rid of them.
If anyone is interested, I can get copies of it made for you guys.

I am sure the chap in the picture with the cheetah on his lap inside the fence is a regular at the NAFA meet, either that or he is a dopleganger!
