Hawking Lures
by M-J Hoods

After using many different types of lure I have settled on a design that I think is practical, uniform and simulates the shape and size of the average game bird. Because of the "uniform" shape and colour of the lures the transition between the two types, the "Retrieve lure" and the "Throw Lure", is easy and not "something new". The wings are attached in such a way to encourage spinning in the air and the lures are fully padded for safe footing and binding.

The Retrieve Lure:
This is weighted perfectly at 4 1/2 oz without wings and food and just over 5oz fully loaded. The wings are attached in such a way that it will spin ..... making it a more attractive and will always land on the floor with a wing upwards for a good plucking session. The food placement is in the centre of the lure with easy access .
The Throw Lure:
Designed to encourage "waiting on" and Stooping, footing and binding to rising game. Wait until the falcon has taken a pitch slightly up wind ... then throw the lure at a high angle down wind so the lure makes a big arc.... watch the falcon stoop in from position and try and hit it. You will find that the falcon will stand on it in the same way that she would on real prey and eat from the head positioned food an then start a plucking session on the wings. The weight of the Throw lure is enough to prevent carrying and also simulates the average weight of the prey species. The weight inserts are placed in the top middle of the lure and fixed in place so there is no movement within .... there is approx 1 1/2 inches of thick padding either side of the weights for extra safety to the falcons feet.

Tiercel = 13oz Throw Lure (Can be made to customer weight specifications)
Falcon = 1lb Throw Lure (Can be made to customer weight specifications)

All lures are tooled for a feather effect on the main body and also to aid binding. The padding used within the lure is rot proof and the leather is easily wiped clean. The lures are hand stitched and the "stress" points of the lures have been strengthened with nylon webbing inserts to prevent eyelets from pulling away from the leather. The stitching is "Barbour" Terko Nylon and will not rot and all edges of the lures are bevelled off to soften and prevent any "sharp" edges exposed to the feet of the falcon.

** When attaching the wings to the Throw Lure make sure that two cable ties are used on each wing. Also make sure that the cable ties are "Loose" and not tightened up.

Please state by e-mail your choice of Lure Colour :- Game (as above), Crow & Magpie (Black) or Mallard (extra £10)

TL01 (Throw Lure)
£35 plus P&P £3.50
TL02 (Throw Lure Hardwood Peg)
£10 plus P&P £2
RL01 (Retrieve Lure)
£25 plus P&P £3.50

Griff,
I have to say I think all these new ideas you are coming up with are 1st class
and you should keep them coming. No one else seems to pay such attention to detail.A lot of them are small things that we don,t think about,or just make do with inferior versions.
Great stuff Griff.

Very smart lures, but does having all the tassels on the end, make it any more effective than the simple leather pad with wings attached (sometimes just a leather pad and no wings) - home made lures I've been using for fifty years?
What's the idea of a spinning lure? I've never seen quarry act in this way.
Not having a dig. I'd like to know the advantage of a spinning lure if there is one.

When I make my lures, I use a dark and a light contrasting colour; so when they spin, it is just another focal point for the bird to see. Also when for example a pigeon or pheasant flies, the upper and lower body parts are different colours................................that's my way of thinking anyway:yawinkle:

Hi all

He took the throw lure tonight in great style :D ...... timing was perfect by both of us I think..... good stoop in and he bound to the lure at the top of its arc....... and came down with it perfectly (so 13oz is no problem for a 1lb 6oz Tiercel)

Berkut...... I had a problem with my throwing handle..... the small black swivel with diamond loops are no good... they tear through the leather..... I dont think you have one of those handles but if you do let me know and I will send you a revised version up :D

Hi All

This is my "Kite Lure".......... I will be testing it this week :) Its on a small SAMPO swivel so with a bit of luck the wings will make it spin.

i think the lures are great and very well made, just one thing though, the method of tying the food to the lure i used to use it my self i mean the plastic slides which are held with spring and friction is used to keep the food in place my harris pulled at one of them and swallowed the thing didnt come to any harm though it came up in the casting the next day i now just tie the food on just to be on the safe side.

 They will eat anything...

Best solution in that case is to just knot and melt the ends of the food string so there is no possibility of the plastic stopper coming off. The toggles I use are very secure.

i havnt read all replies to this thread so if i re-produce, soz in advance, first why do you need a lure, shurely, lets say a crow falcon! get two right hand wings and tie them together elbow to elbow, they will naturaly spin in the air and weigh next to nothing so if the young falcon and the inept lure swinger come into contact then there's no harm done, the same goes for phesant, partridge, and blackbird, once you add an ounce of leather and get it wrong the bird has a broken kneck or leg! i realy can't see the sence in adding a padded leather lure projectile into the equation.

I'd use a lure for feeding an imprint or for long recalls - never use wings, an imprint will pluck them for fun whilst mantling - just use the pad.

Jim.
