Did you find someone in the UK selling them or did you have to go to the states to find them?
I have heard that they are a pretty rare thing over here at the moment.

Hi Graham

I found them in the US  I did have a look over here for them but all gone! Even in the US they are nearly sold out..... PM me if you are looking for a supplier who still has them in stock :D

I used Andy Peels bells last year and I must say that his are just as good..... I am trying out bells to find a favourite..... and RV's have the edge for me at the moment...... in low light and at distance I could pinpoint my Tiercel by sound after the little fekker decided to have a short sebatical a couple of fields away.... he was behind trees as well! But at all times i knew his direction and rough distance and picked him up coming back at me by the bells.

I have used them ans have one of a pair left....ithink they're excellent and very 'sharp'...they one I have is starting to tarnish and seems to be losing clarity......could I dip it in vinegar to clean it???? ( believe martin jone sells them) I am keen to try andy peels ....just wish he'd get a move on with his house!

Hi GF

Put your tarnished bell over a flame (gas cooker...if you have one) wait until it goes "Cherry Red" and then let it cool on a concrete slab.... give it a quick polish and you will find that the tone is as good as new :D

Griff . IMHO not much difference noise wise between Noble and Velerde ( use to be asborno but have posted elsewhere about that) . where the big difference comes is durability... I had two pairs of on two gosses back in '92/93 and the both lasted about 6 weeks:roll: bewit keepers wore thro and cracks apeared around bell slits. still have them too HTH

Hi Julian

I have not had them for long... so I dont know about their longevity.... but at the moment I think they are great :D The size 2 is a little smaller than Andy's bells and the tone of these V Bells compared to the Nobles I have are better... all three makes of bells are well made and have their good points..... just giving them a go :) I will be getting some "Counce" bells to...to see what they are like.

I have a pair of original Amritsari bells given to me by my late mentor several years ago. The bells were made circa 1940, and are still going strong. God alone knows what kind of brass they used for those bells, but even after 66 years, and two full season on my gosses, they still sound as good as new. (My mentor too used those bells on quite a few of his birds).

velarde bells are excellent, used one on amerlin I flew once, also used one on a perlin I fly now, excellent tone, must say I dont fly my perlin now with bell on.lost two deck feathers 2years ago,I was very lucky they both grew back. The larger bell I think the noble is a excellent bell.

any chance they are bronze .
brass tends to become brittle due to the zinc oxidising ,,
there are two alloy groups of bronze
alpha
alpha/beta ..
one work hardens and will increase it's 'ring' ..
silver soldering as against tin solder will last longer .. but .. silver has a 'slip mechanism' and will fail eventually so some bronzes are hard soldered or 'brazed 'as some would have it called .
a n d it goes on & on & on ......

The Amritsari bells I have are made of brass, not bronze. The original Amritsari bells were made from a special kind of brass, that is no longer avaibale now. All our bells are silver soldered.

I bought several pr Counce bells a few years ago and every one of them has not lasted more than 1.5 yrs without cracking at the drilled hole. A pair of Velarde you are more likely to lose due to bewit breakage or hawk loss. They last forever...

Griff you should have never taken them off
I was thinking of making bells for lamping so they reflect at night with the lamp easy done and should help to locate birds.
Just designing new bells for when i start up again in the near future as i think there is a market for very small bells with good sound quality, my smallest is a little to big for a musket which a lot of people are flying at the moment.

I am always looking for small bells with a good tone that can last at least a season the smaller the better in my view. Alf .

Try an electrical wholesaler, they supply them. Not much more than an ordinary tie wrap - a couple of hundred for £3 or £4.

or alternatively
try an automotive electrical supplier,

the sort of folks who deal with kit-car builders,
these cable ties are used for
attaching the wiring looms securely to the bodywork;)

Griff I used these bells for years and also the Asborno's, Ricardo's mentor.
I still have a few pairs left unused but tarnished, I have them in a wooden box wrapped in tissue but they have still tarnished. I may try the heat treatment on them though.
I bought about 20 mixed sets about 15 years ago from a Dutch company and he was supplying Martin Jones with them at the time. I know because I was there when they did the deal.
I have tried Nobel Bells and many others but always fall back on the Velarde Bells as they are without doubt the best I have used.
I have to say I have some bells at the moment from Salman Ali (Turumti) on the Forum that he gave me in Abu Dhabi and they seems to be pretty good but I will let you know at the end of the season just how well they have lasted
Still waiting for my Peels Bells Andy so hurry up and get that house finnished LOL

I was using Asborno bells when he sold out to Valardi. I like them, but find them a bit heavy. Also, I can only get about 2 months out of one before it cracks. If they get a lot of wear, they need to be anealed every 6 weeks or they crack on me. I will not use Counce bells. They sound good, and they are very light. The problem I have with them is that I can not aneal them. The solder melts and the bell falls apart. I have several pairs right now that are coming apart.
I think the best deal out there are the **** bells. They were all you could get up until just a a few years ago. Bell makers have decided to reinvent the wheel, or bell as it were. But all they have really managed to do is make them more expensive. I can get about 6 months out of a **** bell on average, and if I reshape and aneal them every 3 or 4 months I can get a few years from one. I can hear them from as far, and I get better service out of them, and I pay far less for them. For the same cost of a Valardi bell you can get a really pretty **** bell. If you have Yen sticking out of your ears I guess it really don't matter as long as they are real pretty. I live on a fixed income, and I always look for the best value for my rupel so that I don't have to buy bells so often. I am a tightwad I guess.

Hi,
new to the thread, so this is my first post!!

I'm completeley unable to get some Velarde bells, The ones i do have would not look out of place on an eagle, never mind my newly aquired runt of a Male Harris. I guess I'll tail mount one (velarde) and try some Mr peels bells when he starts to make 'em. BTW my Velarde tail bell lasted over three years and still rings like new, It is just too bloody big!!!

Andy, give me a shout or a quote for a pair of bells for a small teircel harris when you start to make them again!

Cheers
