I went along to see a female Redtail that was for sale and when the guy took her out of the aviary to show her to me, one of her anklets was very, very tight and had caused her foot to swell up quite bad. The scales behind the anklet were damaged too. He removed the anklet straight away and cleaned her up. She is a very good hunter and is very good natured, but will there be any lasting damage to her foot/leg?

It sounds like the anklet was not allready tight,, more like damage to the scales, have induced a foot infection, hence the swelling!!! antibiotics only cure, as this is an internal infection..

Cheers Merger, he has now got her on antibiotics. How long will this take? I was really impressed with her nature and am still interested in her, or should i leave well alone?

Cheers

As long as scale damage heals ok, a couple of wks, if damage severe, better off loose lofted for six wks,

If the guy youre buying it off only noticed that her anklet was,as you say,Very Very tight on the day you came and then decided to do something about it makes me have niggling doubts......You know what I mean.............?

It may not be an infection, just the torniquet effect of the anklet, if so will settle over a few days. I would always give covering antibiotics in case.
Watch for scarring as this this can cause constriction again.

I trapped a harris that had been at liberty for several months,on her legs she had cable ties for bewitts,I literally had to cut one out,her leg was swollen so badly! Her scales had become blackened and damages.I cured her with salt water and intrasite gel,a course of senolux may also be needed if infected!
