Hi folks,

can anyone reccomend an avian vet in LONDON or locally. I don't need one yet, but just realised I should have a list for routine and emergencies.

Please don't slag me off for not doing this earlier, but I've only had my bird nine months.....

cheers to all in advance!!

If you are in London then Swindon is one hour from the M25/M4 juntion and there you will find one of the leading avian vets. See the below link:

I know that it is a bit of a drive, but so few vets truelly understand avian medicine that it is worth the drive if you value the welfare of your bird. A for instance is that general anaesthetic is potentially very risky for birds, and most vets only get the opportunity to do this very occasionally. At GWR they do this routinely and I know who I would prefer to trust to do this.

Years ago a HH I had suffered a squirrel bite that stopped it being able to extend a toe. I went to a local vet that said he had experience of birds and i had to help him read a very basic text book so that he could just bandage the foot. He didn't know what else he could do. So I decided to do the 4 hour round trip (I live in north Herts) to Neil Forbes (before he started GWR) who realised that the tendon had been severed and promptly operated and re-attached the two ends of the tendons, who else could have done that?! There have been a couple of occasions since that I have also condsidered the trip worth while with a sick or injured bird.

Also, get your bird insured, then you won't have to weigh up whether or not you can afford treatment, you just get in the car and drive to the vets knowing that all will be ok. Look in the archives for threads on who insures BoP, its been covered comprehensively before.

I hope this helps.
