Hi All

Turn your mews Jesse into flying straps with leather eyelet tabs and you can also use then for our safety snap for the glove and with our "Kill Lanyard"...... the sea fishing safety snap seen here has a breaking strain of 34kg and is suitable for small falcons.... the eyelets prevent the snap tearing through the leather. The eyelet tabs can also be used with the Scissor snap seen in the picture :D The Safety snap can also be attached to the swivel as an extra saftey feature.

We will be reducing the length of the tab by half and punching a hole in it instead if a jesse slit as this is just as effective.

We have also strengthened the snap connection to the braided kangaroo lanyard with a double layer of kangaroo.

So how is that any different to flying in mews jesses??...You still have a slit that can get caught up!!! It doesn't make any sense!

Griff you have too much time on yours hands, you'll be inventing the square wheel next.

Your design doesn't improve on the original flying jess with a pinhole.

The hoods and lures are first class but this seems daft.

Yours Jim.

effectivley it is still flying with a mews jess with extra eyelet??

still like the look off the kill lanyard but think you should loose the idea of the eylet extension to the mews jess.;)

Hi Both

Feed back is what is good for me :D If you think its a no go on the tabs .... then fine :D I have used them...... and all seems to be ok ....easily put in and easily taken out.... however if you guys think that its a no go.... then ok :D

I take your point and will bin the idea.... however the safety snap does the job nicley :D

security wise it gives you extra things to go wrong and I belive is less secure than using permenent flying jesses with a pin hole and the sea fishing swivel used there, which is the set up I use for the kes BUT I only trust the sea fishing swivel because my weathering is completely meshed in and If it did break she couldn't go anywhere. The problem with these swivels is that the cliping and uncliping of them weakens them at the top of the clip part, this is where they can break, we used them in the field with all our birds, the biggest being a female red and I have known them to break in the field.

I agree with the other posts as to the suitability of this idea, to use when flying free. Nice braiding though!
If you are looking for a tempory way of securing a bird wearing flying jesses, for instance when an accidental slip is to be avoided, the below pics are what I use. Made with 3/4" nylon webbing and a plastic snap lock.

I must emphasise that it is not safe to leave a bird unattended when using this gadget. Its not 100% secure and has no swivel. Its use is only for TEMPORY attachment.
Using the correct thickness and width of flying jesses in the 'lock', it has withstood a bate from a 2lb 10oz FRT.

Hi All

I Agree with everything said :D The safety snap is great for on the glove security .... put throught the swivel ..... and is also good for quick securing method when the falcon is taken up off the floor in the field....... as is the scissor snap.

I would never advocate the swivel snap as a mews swivel.

Experimentation and innovation are commendable, otherwise progress and development would probably stagnate. Griff's workmanship is unquestionably superb, but perhaps a good nights sleep would help him see the shortcomings in his jess extensions. That observation is entirely constructive and in no way detracts from his efforts. Fishing swivels were regarded as unsafe 40/50 years ago and it's difficult to see how that can have changed, Claire describes breakage due to metal fatigue, I can recall internal breaking due to rust. What has grabbed my attention is Venividevenatio's idea; now developing that would be useful; perhaps Griff would put his undoubted talents to work there.
