We don't have insurance for pets here. Bear(rabbit dog) impaled herslf on some rebar yesterday. We thaught it would be ok. Well....it went in about 2 inches and she needs to go to the vet. We will see. She was just fine chasing the rabbits today, so hopefully it is faking it for attention.

I agree especially now that Dick Best has retired. So far I haven't needed to treat anything since he retired but would appreciate any suggestions for an alternative. I haven't contacted the Portishead surgery yet regarding what is now in place there.
If any of the Bristol falconers can provide any info that would be great.
Mark.

Last year one of my HH chicks fell or was pushed from the nest site and broke its leg. I travelled down to Swindon from Nottinghamshire and was advised it would cost about £360 to have the leg repaired (alternatively I could have had the bird put down). I wasn't breeding the birds on a commercial basis so decided that when the chick was sold it would at least repay the vets fees. I was advised to put the chick back into the nest when I got home. Well twelve hours after leaving home I returned, put the chick into the nest, went into the house for a coffee, came out fifteen minutes after to check on the chick and would you believe it the mother had killed it. It wasn't insured, I now place my nest sites closer to the ground. The service provided by the vet was exceptional, but pricey. Nevertheless I will use the same vet again if my birds need medical treatment.

I had the misfortune of using Dick Best - once. I wouldn't let that man near one of my birds ever again. Maybe some of you found him to be OK. I found him rude and ignorant. I took my Harris to see him with a damaged wing (slightly drooping - wouldn't use it) Neil Forbes was out of the country at the time.
All I wanted was an x-ray and examination. Dick best did neither. Instead, he tipped my hawk upside-down, held her by her legs and "bounced" her up and down to "see what she does with her wings". I told him in no uncertain terms to stop. With very bad grace, he did so. He then proceeded to try and cast her. After a couple of grabs, he had her half in and half out of a towel. He then laid her on the table and ROLLED her along it like a sausage!!
By then, I had had enough. I picked her up and left immediately. The man is a menace.
I took her straight to Nailsworth - Neil Forbes old surgery - and she was seen by one of the other vets. She was very quickly cast, sedated and x-rayed. She had bruising to her carpal joint and soft tissue swelling. Metacam and ABs. The whole process was done in twenty minutes - with nominal stress to the hawk.
I have used Neil Forbes for 16 years. They don't get any better. You pay peanuts - you get monkeys, in the shape of Dick Best.
I have heard people grumble at Neils's prices - then complain "the bird died anyway". Yes, probably - in a lot of cases - because some people don't act immediately. The bird looks sick - lets see what it's like in a couple of days.
Too late! So don't blame the vet!
And sorry, but it makes a HUGE difference whether the bird is treated in someone's front room or a high-tech surgery. That's just plain obvious:roll:
..yeah .of course...
p.s.
i think you"ll find its "neIl....
