i am playing with the idea of fitting my birds with the Nick Fox style white anklets with contact numbers on.
however, i aint too keen on the white leather, prefering black or dark leather anklets.
does anyone here employ this method and if so tell me more about what you use etc.
been trying to find shellac to cover the ink but finding it difficult.
instead ive tried aquasure, (liquid rubber) which covers well, is weather proof and supple and does not peel or crack.
would like to know of anyone else who uses them and any ideas.
cheers, H.

I have my tel number on there hunting straps....however they are white.

you could use a white marker on black leather/roo

I have previously used pale coloured kip and written my phone number on one anklet and the word "reward" on the other in permanent marker (the sort you use to mark up CD's)

The main problem with whatever you use to grease them will essentially darken them - I have yet to come across white leather that would be suitable for anklets.

The better option I have found is to use pale coloured flying jesses as Mass suggests.

thanks guys.
i have plenty of good strong white leather which is highly suitable for anklets, thats not a problem.
i stencil the numbers onto the anklet making it tidy. it is then covered in aquaseal to stop it fading and getting weathered.

Nick Fox recomends stenciling the numbers then covering with leather shellac, (which i cannot find).

can I ask Kev, how do you get the numbers onto the jesses? how do you prevent it from fading etc? or do you just redo it time and again.

i should also mention i use permanent fliers which are way too narrow to attatch numbers. lol.
i did use a small light plastic tag with my numbers on it but am thinking of changing it.
cheers, H.

I use normal tan leather and mark both the anklets and jesses/hunting straps with the IBR number.

I use a small craft type soldering iron. It has a very fine point - so you can write accurately with it. As it actually burns into the leather - you are left with an idelible, black number etc. written into the leather. It will not fade/wash off/smudge etc. - and you can still grease the leather regularly without affecting it.

I find it's the best method - and it shows up very well on brown/tan leather.

Hope this may help!!

i've heard of slightly burning the kangaroo skin (smooth side) to decorate them, suppose you could use that for a phone number before you fit the bird with them

Similar method to the above, ........Use metal work number/letter stamps, the marking tip heated with a blow torch until they are hot enough to be only just bearable with a quick touch to your own skin. Place on the leather and tap sharply with a mallet. Practise on scrap to get a 'feel' for the job! The stamps give a neat, clear mark.
A piece of wood/metal is useful as a placing guide.

mmm a good idea using a moldering tool.

I'll surely try on my next Alymeri.

i like the hot stamps idea :supz:

might try it on his flying jesses:D

pity i fitted new anklets at the weekend so i doubt he would appreciate hot stamps being hammered into his legs through the anklets

I have stamped my phone on pale kip flying jess's, but it soon becomes discoloured & once it's became wet, virtualy unreadable. I never thought about heating the stamps, I'll have to try that what a great idea! I've found the best place to put a phone number is on a plastic tail mout like the ones aupplied by Falconry Electronics. You can use those "Letraset" transfers & then paint over the leters with quick drying varnish. I used Celire fly tying varnish.

If you buy the cage and avairy you will see an advert for a company called 'Rings of distinction' the will provide split rings in various colours with your name or reward and your number this is what in did the cost about £5 for 10 and are really easy to fit and people notice them much cheaper than an ibr ring and if the bird is found they call you.. sounds like an idea P.UK.
cheers for that.

i use the tags, much like brianM's. but again want to free the birds feet up as much as poss'.
gonna try the heated stamps idea. also, keep looking into the white leather thingy too.
and the closed rings, and numbers on jesses, and the tailmounts with numbers on, may try the soldering iron on the anklets.
may even bleach the number accross the tail feathers, put on 2 telemtry bullets, and hope for the best.

can you tell i lost my harris last year?? lol.
cheers for the input. i guess no-one uses Nick Fox' idea then??? lol.

I use a soldering iron on normal kangeroo leather before greasing. You can write what you like....and it doent come off. Tricky to read when wet though.

Excellent thread! Some great idea's. Bleaching the number into the feathers reminded me of a white pigeon I caught a couple of years ago which had the information [Post Code & Phone No] stamped in indelible red ink on the wing primaries. I like Brian M's brass "Reward" tags. The rings from Rings Of Distinction look worth a try as well [Do they have a website?] The promise of a reward is likely to motivate people far more than just puting contact details, but it needs to be prominently displayed & be imediately apparent. I have my address ,etc & the offer of a reward on a piece of paper Sellotaped round the telemetry tag, but this assumes that the finder is going to be able to remove the tag & untape the piece of paper. But realistically how many non falconers are going to handle a bird of prey more than they absolutely have too. They are probably going to hand it in to the nearest "Bird Sanctuary". Some of whom, if they dislike falconers are not above removing rings & releasing it or keeping it as a way of atracting visitors & thus donations to their organisation. The word REWARD may stop it progrssing down this route.
