Lurcher isn't a term used in the US or at least I haven't heard any one say it. I have heard coarsing hound (sp?) before. I'd like to know about he orgin of the term "lurcher". Hmm - guess I could do my own research

My understanding, a lurcher is a Sight Hound/terrier cross.

the general term lurcher is as old as the hills here greg,it bares nothing to any type of dog as most of the old out crosses are collie types, tho the bull terrier is very popular,a lurcher is really the name given for a planned greyhound cross, heres a couple of pics of mine the brindle is a collie bull greyhound, the rough bitch with her is a collie deerhoung greyhound and the fawn rough dog is a greyhoundxdeerhound bull collie greyhound....

HI bird dog in this country a lurcher is a grayhound cross diffrent people use difrent types of dog,s crossed with a grayhound to do diffrent things if you wanted it just for rabbiting you might cross with a whippet or bedlington terrier some of the first crosses were with collie,s to ad a bit of brains grayhounds are a bit daft now there are hundreds of difrent crosses so work better than others my fav is collie cross grayhound to salukie+collie grayhound in my opinion makes good all round dog other people have there own fav,s it is what use to work for me hope this helps /dave

Hi Bird Dog,
I think part of the name Lurcher, Lur for example dates back to Anglo-Saxon times when the name Lur was used to describe a Theif.
Most Lurchers today would rather steal a nice Texas Steak than have it given to them.
Hope this helps.
The pic is of my Wife with our two lurchers Archie and Molly, sadly Old Archie is no longer with us but a better dog you could not of found.

Hmmm. Lots of info here. My guess is the collie mixes have a white blaze on their chest. I wonder how they do on larger quarry. We have alot of feral hogs in Texas. It's legal to hunt them with dog, becasue they are not native and are considered to be vermin. Many hogs are trapped and sold for meat. We came across this one while quail hunting. I let it go a little worse for wear, but alive and well.

the white blaze really bares nothing BD,there are lots of guys using them on hogs, generally new zealand and austrailia, however theres a few in this country starting to get into the boar side of things, tho generally the bull bred type lurchers are beind used.....

nothing to do with the thread but we received a letter from Fort Worth after the mother-in-law had been researching the American side/s of the family prior to her death ..

AGREE --
Ft. Worth is pretty culturally diverse. Historically there have been six flags over Texas. The south in general has alot of English, Irish and Scots. There's an old Johnny Cash song "Mississippi man and Lousianna woman". Alot of the deep south move to Texas during the oil boom- that's how my family got here. A Scots/Irish man from Mississippi married a cajun lady from New Orleans and moved to Texas. The Dallas/Ft. Worth area has about a million people living here now.
