dont know about the traditional bewits, but the ben long method could not be simpler.
a strip of leather just big enough to go around the birds leg, 2 holes punched through , 1 at each end.
then you put a small cable tie through the bell put the leather around birds leg, thread the cable tie through both holes and pull tight.

Hattie,
The only problem I would have with your bewit is that we need to take the equipment off at night here. It gets too cold and the birds will get frost bite if the bells are left on. So I need a bewit that is easy to get on and off.

Give me a chance Greg!! :D I'll do one on button bewits a bit later. I have also used these in order to cut down on the amount of noise the hawks make in their aviaries.

Greg has what we would call 'extremes' of weather, a metal bell left on which could touch the hawk would cause damage in very, very cold weather.

Theres nothing wrong with leaving bells on your hawk all the time in England.

Sara,
Remember where I am? In Minnesota it can get down to -35c. The normal low in January and early February is -18c. If you are not getting below zero where you are at you should not have any problems.

Greg I make mine the same as Hattie's except I cut slits instead of punching holes. I don't cut the tag ends off, leave them a little long, cut the tag ends into long thin points, and put a little epoxy on them to stiffen them. I use them on Trx and bells. I take them off after each hunt, just leave the bells in the reciever hard case and you're good to go. Never had one come off.

Jeff

That button bewit in the pics is old....it has never come off either. It is really easy to put on and take off tho. Just shows you there are many ways to skin a cat.....8-)

Yup, button bewits are bullet proof. And I do use them on RT sized birds. Since I've gone to smaller trx and now smaller bells the leather strips are getting pretty thin. The modified traditional bewit turned out to be easier.

Jeff,
With the smaller bells you can still get the bigger leather thru, you just have to pull on it a little harder. Then you just cut some notches for the handle on the bell.

That's true Greg, it's just the slots on the Marshall Micro's are so freaking narrow and thin for the tarsal mount I just cut a bunch of strips at the same time and use them for the bells also, just too lazy I guess. The button bewit is easier gettin' off, that's for sure!
Cheers Greg,
Jeff

I use a cable tie to attach the bell to the eyelet on the anklet.
This keeps the bell away from contact with the legs and feet and does away with yet another strap around the birds leg.
They only used bewits in the old days as they had no other alternative for leg mounting.
Why clutter up your birds leg with anklets, rings and then bewits, must be like flying around with shackles.
Try to imagine if you had straps the same scale on your legs and you had to go for a run? exactly, you would find a better system.

I could'nt agree more with you Hacker and some of the bewits and jesses are so over the top in size I've seen jesses on harris hawks that would be better suited to eagles, no need for it in my opinion. :x

I leave my kit on all the time too, but I'm from scotland. I think in America, the winters re very much colder there, and you would have to be carefull, but here I dont think it gets cold enough. Also if you fly a harris, you need to be alittle carefull if the temp drops to freezing or below anyway, from a frostbite, and wingtip oedema point of view. To minimise the noise of the bell in the aviery, i put an inch of insulating tape over the hole in the bell, and it works really well for me. Mind you, sable carries his bell on his tail, but he bathes up to his neck (sometimes!) and it still stays on. I have overwintered my hawk with bells on his legs in Scotland for afew years with out ill effect though. Hope this helps.
