Following on from the previous thread on making a traditional bewit - heres some instructions on how to make a button bewit. Same caveats apply as before:
Cut a strip of leather:

Slide on the bell onto the leather and punch a hole on the 'button' side of the bell:

Offer up to the hawks leg (or red pen in this case) to work out where to make the slit for the button:

Make the slit for the bewit I punch holes at each end of the slit as it will get some wear:

The finished item. These are a little tricky to get right first time - its getting the slit in the right place that is difficult. I recommend you have a few goes at it with some scrap leather first.

Just out of interest, is there any reason you'd use a button bewit over any other method? Do they work better? Are they more suited to a particular size of bird? Or is it just a traditional way of doing it?

I have used button bewits for mounting tx to birds leg. I have also mounted leg bells in this way so as not to annoy neighbours with constant bell ringing on a freelofted bird.
Button bewits have many uses. I have also done a photo thread about traditional permanent bewits http://www.falconryforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18400

do you not find that the buttons pull through, that would be my only worry?
Cheers

I wouldnt leave button bewits on permanently - therefore they are checked for wear on a regular basis.

If made properly the button will not pull through the slit. I have flown birds for years and this is the only method I use. No bells ringing whilst traveling to and from in the car and no noise in the mews. Not much point in doing a double slit for back though the button twice though. A good snug fit is all that is needed. One of my mates attatches his transmitter to his falcons leg with the same bewit and never had any trouble.
Cheers Yorkie.

Cool, I realised you wouldn't leave them on all the time, just wondered how easily they come off when the bird goes through cover. Looks like a good idea will try it this winter.
Cheers
Tom.
