Hopefully this thread will illustrate how to make a turks head knot.
Start with 4 leather strands, moisten them with some water so that they are damp:

Loosen one of the straps by pushing an awl up through and out of the middle of the tightened loops:

Continue to do this with the remaining straps, passing them under their neighbour and up through the middle:

Phillip Glasier once promised to show me how to do it properly (make a Turks head knot that is) but when I reminded him he said he had joined a craft club and that I should join it and all would be revealed I told him I could not see him basket weaveing and he said not that sort of Craft Club it's a "Can't Remember Any Fuc*ing Thing" Club and walked off laughing he was dead within the year GRHS

Well done FHF! I have been tying these on my hoods for a while now, but could never seem to get them tight with any consistency - didn't realise you pulled them tight before stringing them up the middle! Thanks!

It depends on how I'm feeling, as if the final plume is too long for your tastes you can always trim them.
I suppose as a guide, for me, I would do a minimum of 4 inches long and then trim to size.

its for you to hold it when your putting the hood on the birds and taking it of .
a good tip for u is once you have done the knott damp it and then with a dowel ,place the knott on the edge of a table and tap it and this will make it rounder :yawinkle:
