do you mean hunting slips ? I.E a thin strip of leather atached to each eyelet?
Yes I have always used these .. My mate tried to persuade me to the use of flying jesses and "cliping on" the field after two years of pestering me I allowed him to kit up my FRT she landed on the first availble perch and took em out ... ! good job the bird was a steady un..

I think he means jesses without eyelets, the old traditional ones. Blackbird is the only one I have seen use them. I like them a lot, but unfortunately I do a lot of free flying at the start of the season so they are a tad risky for me because of the permenant slit at the end..

The same has Huntalone and on a F/H+M/H they are a must and do make life a lot easier.

I will be kitting my FHH out with permanent flying jesses this weekend.
She is well smart and will pull her jesses out right in front of me, then look up at me with what I swear is a grin.
Lets see her gnaw through a pair of permanents!

I alway use hunting slips (thin strips of leather attached to eyelets, no slits) when flying my birds, would never consider flying them with jesses on that have slits. It might only be a slim chance but the thought of my birds being caught up forty foot up in a tree is not a good one. When i free loft them in the summer I only leave anklets on them, they are unapproachable after a couple of weeks anyway. :)

Once I start hunting, the bird has his field jesses on until I finish the season. Easier than changing them out each day. On my big female RT's, I used to change them out so I could weather her as she could break the field jesses. I would put on the para-cord jesses to perch her.

Always used them and always will.
no matter how steady a bird is, if it is on the fist and not being held by anything, all kinds of things could happen..........................normally when you don't want them to.
I make mine about 5mm across, with a hole close to one end; thread it through the eyelet, then pass the opposite end back through the hole and pull up tight.
They also help 'should' an eyelet give up or seperate; keeping the anklet in place.:supz:

I think people are confused over what is what
Flying jesses sames as mews with no slit ... some people have a hole punched in them to clip on (wont see me doing that )
perminate jesses i never heard of .. I am presuming these are hunting/flying slips thin strips of leather which are attached to the anklet via the eylet
Hunting/flying slips I believe are the only way to go ale flown although I have flown long wings with just anklets depending on the bird

I bow to your superior knowledge of this subject.
I stand corrected and will forever now call my hunting slips "Flying Jesses"
But please enlighten me as to what should I now call jesses that have no slit for attaching a swivel ?
And are also passed through the eyelet just like a mews jess but only used when flying ?

no need to get sarcastic
the latter jess of yours i would call daft! as if flying with free with those jesses - passed just through an anklet - i would find that they fall out quite easily and so if your bird was to go of free and get those out how will you get it back? this is assuming you dont use "flying jesses" with them which i wouldnt have thought the need for both?

Well you may call em daft but they exist lass and seem to be used a lot by the clip on falconer
of course you will know this
so what do we call them ?

I fitted some to Bella, whilst fitting her anklets last week, needless to say they have gone, and I have a sneeky feeling she may have eaten them  I will be checking castings!!

I do use perminent hunting jesses/ slips, but I put a very small hole at the end of them to secure my boyto the glove. What does everyone else do? I do sometimes worry that a bit of barbed wire might get caught in them, but am unsure. What are peoples thoughts?

I dont use permanent flying jesses. I use flying jesses with the button, yes some birds pull them out but I dont see why that would stop you getting the bird back, do you have to grab the jesses to stop it flying away? we used to fly a falcon who always pulled hers out, so we flew her with no jesses at all. Once she had flown she would hop back on the glove and we would replace her mews jess's then and there. personally I dont like the hunting straps, just a personal preference but I prefer field jesses with a button and a tiny hole for the clip swivel.

I have seen a few accidents (the spring fails) with the clip on method I daresay there are some good swivel type clips but most i have seen it would take very little for the spring to fail

Jezthats why they are only used in the field, wouldn't use them to permanently teather. I'm talking about sea fishing swivels here
but they are pretty strong, we had a male ferru at the centre who refused to be carried and would hang upside down, no matter how many times you helped him regain the glove, but he never broke a swivel, the only time I have known one break was when I was uncliping it.

I fly an intermewed male redtail without jesses, I honestly don't see the need for jesses, they don't assist in any way during flight or after game has been caught.
I very rarely call my bird back to the glove once he's cast & we're in the field hunting,as he seems to go into " hunting 101 ".
Once he's caught a squirrel, he's traded off & then offered the glove, he's not flighty so will sit on the glove long enough for me to thread a leash through 1 or both his anklets & then hooded.
A mate of mine had the tiniest hole punched in his flying jesses, which he clips either a french snap or a dog clip to, to restrain his bird.
I saw this bird get caught 40' up a tree by one of those holes punched in the jess, a double set of ladders & a free climb was in the process of being made when the bird became untangled.
Imagine, he didn't have telemetery euther, so was fortunate to find the bird in the 1st place.
