View Full Version : Gunning for Pheasants

Had the morning off today so I decided to go pheasant hunting. Now here in MN isn't the best and then we are in the major city. I didn't have time to drive very far away from the city so I wasn't expecting much. Well I walked for about two hrs with seeing only 4 pheasants and only two roosters. Got a shot at one, but beings it was the first bird I have shot at this yr I missed.
I was walking around a swamp and the grass was really high next to the cattails. I heard the dog yelp, I couldn't see him so I called him over to see what had happened. When he got to me I got a good shock. He had gotten sprayed by a skunk full in the face and that was something I wasn't expecting. I just about lost my lunch on the spot. I called it quits then and drove home with the windows down and nose out in the breeze. Bought some anti-stink solution and doused him in it. He is allot better now but you still get that slight hint of skunk every now and then.

Reminds me of the time i laughed as a freinds male harris took a rat osprey style from the surface of a slurry pool at a sewerage treatment plant it went right under as it hit it but i had forgotten i had to ride in the back of the van on the 45 minute return journey i was pretty green by the time we got home.

Greg, I have heard tomato soup is very good for getting rid of the skunk spray smell.
Is this right or just an old wives tale?

It was meant to be a joke. If there is a foul smell ( usually if someone breaks wind ),we blame the dog.

I am slow...what can I say. I can tell you have never smelled skunk before. Totally different stink.
I do believe anything with tomato works, but it will not totally remove the stench. Even the stuff I bought hasn't removed it entirely. I may try and douse him with an anti-stink remedy again.

One of my spaniels jumped into a slurry pit after a pheasant once and it stank.
I threw it into a trough and gave it a good wash and then when i got home i treated it to a ruddy good shampoo.
When she was dry she smelled sweet, but whenever she got wet for weeks after she had a hum of slurry!
Best luck with the anti stink Greg:supz:

Greg,
You should come out here. We have pheasants galore but right now they are in shortwing territory.
I don't think there is anyone in another part of the world who has an idea what being sprayed is like. I get sprayed once or twice a year and as you know it's not a pleasant experience.

Here ya go Greg & Brad.
The stinky little fu****s just dug a burrow under the side steps that lead from my front deck to the mew and weathering area. They're on the front and back porch every night eating cat food lately. Loaned the hav-a-heart traps to a buddy, who then loaned them to someone else and can't get ahold of him. I need to do a little relocation! Too close to the house to shoot.
Greg send your shirt over here it would prolly make a nice pillow for the little ****ers, I can't get rid of them right now so they might as well be comfortable.

Jeff,
Don't even talk about those things. I was blasted this spring. A female had a litter of 5, I got all 5 plus the female and still took it full force in the kisser. Gag, puke, gag and struggle for breath. One day I was where something had dug under one of the barns. When I looked to the left we were face to face. I backed out politely and got the old cannon. Nasty things.

The suckers are everywhere here, I walked out on the porch last night wasn't paying attention, I thought a cat was in my way. I just usually stick a foot out put it under one of their arm pits and lift them out of the way without thinking. Glad I looked at the last second. I backed in the house very slowly. I think I'll trap 'em and send 'em to Greg.

They aren't so bad here this year but Abby tangled with one. I went right to the Vet to make sure her rabies shots were up to date.
We once were grouse hawking in Montana. They were everywhere. I walked around a boulder and came face to face with one. "S'cuse me ma'am" was all I could think to say as I backed out.
Maybe we could send them to the Brits. Those guys don't know or understand the pleasure of having goo sprayed from the hind end of one on them. Stink, gag and it makes breathing hard.

Naw, I like the Brits too much. They would make the perfect biological weapon though. We need to send them off to the next war to end all war's.
Drop em out of B-52's by the ton, fighting would cease instantly on both sides.:bio:

Like I said, I get sprayed a couple of times a year. One time I saw one grabbed the glock and went out to duel with him. Couldn't find the skunk!!! Then I felt something run across my foot!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!! Broad daylight too so it might have been rabid. Walked behind it until it was in the ditch then let loose. At 40 feet I couldn't hit it then it let loose with a cloud which blew towards the neighbor's place. He comes driving down the road wondering what all the noise was about. He grabs his pistol and starts shooting. The skunk simply waddles away. Over the hill he goes blasting at it. After a minute or two he comes back with a grin on his face. Then I can hear the window slamming shut in their house. His kids are roaring at the two dead eyes who between them scattered enough lead around to hold off a small army. His kid grabbed a scatter gun and told both of us we might be able to hit the skunk with that if we stood back far enough so the pattern had a chance to spread out:rolleyes:
