What Centre have you been working at? I would have thought that after 4 years you would have at least picked up a bit of the basic knowledge (like what your asking)? It doesnt sound like they've used you to your best potential.
You should have no problems seeking out some good designs of housing on here. Once you have all the relevant bits in place, you should have no problems either getting in touch with some good breeders from the site.
Just out of interest, have you covered basic husbandry, etc at the centre, and do you have access to a mentor?

please make certain you have all relevant knowledge needed before you go ahead. As stormrider quite rightly stated, if you have been working at this centre for 4 years, why do you not have the answers to the question you have asked. I don't mean to put you down and I apologise if it comes over that way but, how often over the 4 years have you gone in to help and what exactly did your duties involve. What centre is it, specifically for birds of prey, a rescue centre, or what?
I know of someone who "helped" at a centre, actually only went in a few times and then started his own centre running courses. terrifying:roll:
You will get all the help you could possibly need on this forum but no-one will pull any punches with you and if they don't think you have enough knowledge they will tell you so. However, if you do have enough knowledge but just need some more help and advice you have certainly come to the right place. First and foremost, you must be honest about your ability (or lack of)
look forward to reading your reply:)

Most "centre volunteers" seem to be taught how to man a power-washer & how to train s*** to fly off a shovel. As with the Wanted Ad the other night - slave labour. Not all - but many.

completely disaggre mate! ive volunteered at a centre for almsot 3 years! i know how to llok out for illnesses from the unfortnaute experiences at the centre which are sometimes unavoidable with any animal, i know howe to pick up birds safely, how to m,ake equipment, what different birds are like! which surprises me that this lad has to ask - the birds he mentions surely he has some at the centre or his boss has some experience with? by working at the centre ive been able to trian verious birds - owls to hh.
im terrified that this lad has been there for 4 years and would appear to have no knowledge of weatehrings and keeping a bird?
of your committed to the centre like you should be too a bird, ask the right questions, get involved where possible, listen and learn then a centre can be a great source of knowledge. BUT if the centre you work at is run down, not very good, the boss is just in it form the cash and has no desire to teach you and you have no desire to elarn and get stuck in then yuo cant expect after 4 years to be ready for a bird but then again this might not apply to you so ignore the latter.
just out of interest how old are you? as this could be a factor in getting a bird?
how often did you go up to the centre?
what birds have you handled?
were you involved in the bop/falconry aspect?
or just genral sweeping for 4 years?
i am also very good at maing tea ;)

calm down guys, just because he asked the question doesn't mean he doesn't know the answer. centres often keep birds in mews which would be impractical or dangerous at home. for example my centre was in an enclosed building with a partially netted roof, all the falcons were on shelf perches at night but they were not enclosed as the building was, getting other opinions on things is never a bad thing, particually before he has a bird, I learnt a lot at a centre, but still came on here asking whether it was possible to put a kestrel on a running chain. It may be that he doesn't know enough yet, but I'm not gonna jump to that conclusion.

claire, have I missed something? I have re-read the thread but can't see where he mentioned a kestrel or a running chain!
I don't think any of us were implying that all centres were the same. I don't know Trigger (jenny) but from the little I have dealt with her I'm positive that when simmonds goes to help her he will come away with a wealth of excellent falconry knowledge. What we are saying is that many so-called resuce centres only use their volunteers for menial tasks and don't give them any falconry knowledge. I agree, he came on to ask the questions and that is the wisest move he will ever make. If you read my thread you will see I am asking how much knowledge he has acquired (if any) as no-one can help him until that is clear.

what was the wanted ad?
Thread seems to have "disappeared".
It was advertising for a young apprentice, plenty of work with a cup of rice a day & as much water as you can sup as wages.
It got a lot of stick from the forum.
