I managed to put £10 of unleaded in my Discovery this morning, so phoned the AA and they rang me back and told me to fill it with Diesel and keep topping up with Diesel every 30 miles or so  so I did and which cost me £75 to fill  And to be fair its running perfect, has anyone else ever done this? I have heard however that it can f**k the Diesel pump and should not be done on newer cars.

The problem is unleaded burns at twice the temp of diesel so it can burn out the engine, diluted the way you have wont do any permanent damage mate, run it nearly empty then fill up and all will be fine...graham

Cheers Graham! I guess that its 20 years or so of using petrol  I wasn't thinking! I went in and said "£10 of unleaded mate, pump 4" and the guy said "are you sure?" I said "yeah why?" and it was at that point that the penny dropped

We always had dozy bu**ers who did this....always told them to fill right up and keep filling up....but apparently if you put diesel in a petrol engine its worse....I think because diesel is denser than petrol.
Anyway..there's Sainsbury's PFS advice for you :)

dieael in a petrol is fine as long as its well diluted it will run **** till its gone but wont do any harm mate, pure unleaded in a diesel will burn out the engine and cause £2000 damage at least...graham

Barny is correct petrol burns a lot hotter and diesel, diesel also contains oil that lubricates the engine petrol does not, you can just about get away with a 15% mix the other problem you have is that the two fuels will seperate in the tank so the advice from teh AA was spot on keep topping it up, at work we recentley had a customer with a 12 month old accord 2.2 diesel he had half a tank of diesel and filled it with petrol befor a long journey, 180 miles later it stopped !!! £4000 later and its fixed so my advice is if you ever do put more that £10 worth of petrol in your diesel, get your tank drained.

In many cases this is impossible to do as the pump nozzel for petrol is larger than the one for diesel.

Cheers mate! I was concerned about the viscosity of diesel and was aware that the petrol is probably sat on top of it in the tank, I'll have to get off road and stir it up  :yawinkle: :supz:

The filler hole on a petrol is smaller, so a diesel wont fit, but the filler hole on my disco is big enough for me to stick my hand in

lol you can fit your hand in your filler hole. but petrol can and will destroy your engine
it's like it's devil incarnate and it costs alot to fix it.
how did this get started anyway??

Well Im not to concerned about that as I only use fuel in from sainsburys as a last resort.

I make my own diesel so couldn't have the problem.

if you remember many years ago you would see truck drivers parked up at the side of the road with a little fire under the diesel tank to try and stop the fuel (waxing) and they would put a few gallon of petrol in aswell.and before you all start with the how old are you questions? i was very young when i saw this happening.KEV

i put petrol in my Citreon BX diesel and got two miles up the road before she died ....
upshott was .. and after emptying the fuel tank .. my diesel ran BETTER than before ..
i later donated the whole car to a neighbour who grafted the engine into a later model and to best of knowledge, and by the grins on his face as he passes, all continues to be well ..
i realised that i fell for a trick at the pump the nozzles were switched ...
i'm colour blind so there is a problem in it's self ..
the 'contaminated' fuel was leached into the tanks of a local haulier who was well pleased ..

No Shell only, both the diesels we have run better and give more MPG on shell that anything else including BP Ultima, and I only put super unleaed in my car because it is the highest octane level of all the fuels sold in the UK.

I put 20 quid in mine last week then topped it up with diesel till full, no ill effects. Only concern is that the petrol eats the delicate seals in the diesel pump. Assuming you have no fluctuation in your idle speed i.e. it holds a steady idle and doesn't dip to around 500 revs you should be home free.

Johnny did this a while back ,and he filled the tank up with deisel after putting 10 pounds of unleaded in ,ive heard off taxi drivers they add a little bit of unleaded in the winter as its easier to start .
Hope this helps

in future, just fill your truck up where the h.g.v s refuel. the fuel pistol is massive (but so is the discovery fill hole) and the fuel is delivered miles faster, i think all trucks run on diesel now so there is no chance of another mistake;)

A mates father told me once he put a bottle of whiskey into a snowmobile and mixed the oil extra rich with it, to get him out of a bind. No arm dun!
A bind being 10 miles form nowhere in a blizzard.
Ya do what ya gotta!
