were you working out there with Nic. Fox?
yes....it was through International Wildlife Consultants..I spent three months in Kazakhstan this year...well four...I went there again in september for one month which was another project (taking cloaca samples from birds to be tested for bird flue). It was very good....we caught many bop...the best day:42 sparrowhawks, booted eagle, spotted eagle, harriers, hobbies....and many more....

I flew that saker "Toast" at Whitetailed jackrabbits(Hares) for three years, the first two years she stooped and hit 39 hares,, she pulled a ton of fur and hit (Stunned) about 4 that I thought were dead..The slips were well over 1/4 to mile so I was of no help to her had I had I been able to assist her we would have about 15 in the bag these hares weigh about 9-13 lbs. I got the salukis to help her but she would not allow then in the field, she would just bind and hang on, yet at home even at hunting weight she would play with them..
She was bred by a Bird Breeder in Ontario Canada who sell sakers very reasonable..
Yes I am hunting the dogs with my 2 year old 3/4 gyr saker now.. In fact I ran the dogs twice at the Canadian Meet this past October, due to high winds and a new bird I never flew the bird with them On both occassions we lost the hare in cover but the people with me were blown away at their speed..

That's a good question. Nobody really knows what is altai saker. Is it just the name of the place where this saker come from?
Russian scientists recently said that altais are relict population of gyrfalcons....
in another book I found that altai saker is separated species.....make your own decision.
These birds live higher up in mountains and prey on ptarmigan...what I've been told.
and apparent differences?...my friend Paul Pfander...german falconer who works in Kazakhstan has done very good study on altai sakers. I'm still trying to get it.He explained me few visible differences....but it is very difficult to tell....this year he showed me a wild caught bird which looks more like hybrid....
If you want to see "altai" go to Sonkar centre near Almaty in Kazakhstan....the birds you'll see there are....i would say impressive.Few birds there are really different to sakers!!!...........but you need to get to private breeding aviaries ;-)

His huntingweight is about 760g.
Fatest weight he had was 920g, lowest 560g escaped, after one week without a prey when he was in first year.
Was extreme to see how big the spectrum from highest to lowest can be.

Thanks for the information, Eric.
This is my saker male. He took 17 crow. Very spectacular en brave bird. He 's hunting weight was 660 gr in the first year. Later 720 gr. I lost him for more than 1,5 month. He hunted on his own and learned to take race pigeons, in Belgium, a country that is famous for the best(read; most expensive) race pigeons. He learned to hunt them at their homes. I don't dare to fly him anymore.

And this is his sister again. She took over 50 crow now. Last week she surprised me by stooping an Egytian goose out of the air. The goose(in fact a duck) was on the wrong place, on the wrong moment, while my saker was hunting crow. The goose was hit twice on the head, but the fight on the ground was pretty heavy. When I arrived(they were 400 meters from were I stood), the duck was on her way to heaven. I 'm proud of it but realize that this is not something she is going to do every week.
