Any chance of a picture of her foot, minus the missing scale?
I am asking because my FHH broke off from a tailchase on a duck to go for a windvane! She tried to land on the windvane and lost half a scale on a knuckle. No infection set it, as I treated it immediately, and it didn't end our season.
Just wondering why you are putting her down, as it doesn't seem like a serious injury to me, at least in my case.
Could you give us a few more details?

Yes a pic is worth a thousand words.

Is the injury in such a place that a 'windowed' aylmeri/anklet could be made and fitted, as this would stop the rubbing and allow topical treatment.
Just a thought....

I see what you're saying now.
Does she show signs of pain, if it is touched?
It is high enough up the tarsus that a regular anklet wouldn't touch it, don't you think? I would put Prep H or an antibiotic ointment on it daily until it grew back.
Why do you feel the season is over with this injury? It could happen in the wild, and I don't think she would let herself starve on account of it. If it makes you feel better, just lay off the squirrells for a while.
Maybe try narrower anklets with say, a 7mm grommet. Yours look pretty substantial in the pic. I know mine are, but that's just me. I actually don't like the look ofr the tarsus on a HH.

I would try a set of thin acklets or rolled ones untill it heals. I would not quit hawking tho is the bird is not uncomfortable with it.

Carrying on flying her may be the answer as I was led to believe it would aid circulation in the foot and leg and may speed up her recovery.May be worth verifying this with Sprout. (sorry if you have already looked down this avenue.)

she shows no sign of pain when it is touched ,and i apply ointment dailly.... hmmm i was putting on extra wide ankets to try and spread the stress on the tarsus,, i dont really want to put her away early but thought i was doing right by her
,, thanks guys:supz:

Sorry Brian, just come across this. How is she doing now? It is always difficult to assess without having the bird in front of you, no matter how good a photo. It does look as if it is healing ok, they do take a while. If it bleeds when knocked then that is a relatively good sign, tells you the healing tissue is healthy. It just takes a while for the granulation tissue to be replaced with scar tissue, only then will it stop bleeding when knocked. I would still free-loft fer and try removeable anklets for when flying, if she hoods that will certainly stop damage from bating until you are ready in the field?? Or concentrate on following on - anything rather than allow her to bate and aggrevate the wound. I would still use oversized/wide anklets as opposed to thin ones, wide anklets aren't going to ride up/down the leg and will cause less damage to the tissue underneath.
