View Full Version : Crow dilema...

Hi All
In the past couple of days I have had two fantastic ringing up filghts on crow with my Tiercel. Its not been intentional ....and its been out of the hood on the training ground. He has made a concerted effort on each occasion really battling hard to get above and in almost binding today at about 200ft ..... the high wind assisted the experienced crow to get height even after a stall ..... but the Tiercel got above every time. The Crow evetually baled out into a tree after tumbling down from about 500ft ... with the Tiercel hard at it...... he kept on buzzing the tree to get the old black ****** out of it and succeeded briefly .... but the crow put in again. It was a great flight and lasted for about 4-5 mins only breaking off his persuit when the Crow had lodged itself firmly in some dense cover... and came over to the lure on the ground. Fantastic to watch .....I am starting to wonder if the persuit flight and the Black stuff is his preferred choice? DILEMA!?

if u enjoyed the chase on the black stuff as much as I would then I would brobably tend to encourage the tiercel on it, but if u don't like the idea you'll have to play hard to change the birds perception of ideal (favourite) quarry!
Good luck either way, and sounds like it was a fab flight. hope you keep us informed.
good post

My own tiercel has chased many crows and rooks in this manner. It's very exciting to watch, but I quickly realised he had no intention of actually catching one, being content to frighten them whilst expending his energy. Also, there is no way I would be persuaded to deliberately fly a tiercel at carrion crows, at which even falcons can come unstuck.
I've known the odd tiercel to take rooks, but they are few and far between, and the rook is, in any case, somewhat less of a danger to a tiercel.

Griff,
maybe it`s his way of telling you he wants to be presented with some game rather than a lure?;-)
What sort of training were you doing when he raked off?
Best of luck with him.

Hi griff, sounds great to me , what bird did you say it was , if it was me i would just slip the crows, rooks in more open country , ringing flights are the ultimate in rook hawking , spoke to lots of falconers who havnt seen it , i have had 2 gyr, peregines , and a gyr, peregrine ,saker, who would ring up , up in the clouds it takes a really good falcon to do this , its dangerous as you dont no were it will end , if he is doing it naturaly it would be a shame to stop him , if you want to fly game , you could always try another bird , sorry i am a bit biased i love gull and rook hawking , mark.

Seems to me that the tiercel is fitter than you throught and you've got your head up your arse have a chat with yourself old boy and get him back on game or you could end up with a dead tiercel.

Griff
Had to put Sharpe down a few weeks ago due to a dilema with my hawking ground and dog also being injured I could only manage to get flights for one hawk and choose the falcon. My dilema has now been resolved and Sharpes weight is coming down, we should get back to where we left of in about a week all being well. Would you recommend the kite training and crow hawking fitness training method or do you think flying game would serve him better?.
Seriously Griff leave them crows alone or you could be pick up another falcon next year be responsible.

Seriously Carl.... read the first paragraph of this thread. He will be on game soon enough...... hope Sharpe gets sharper and out there. I have just doubled my land extending my flight in the same area.... so the rest of the season is looking good.
Nothin to do with experience griff, gamehawkers are only as good as their last bird, they are also as good as the land they fly! Anyone can learn in ten minutes how to get a bird waiting on the seriousness begins thereafter!

Hi Mark
I can see the appeal in Crow hawking after todays flight, its was great to watch ....albeit un-intentional. I read Roger Uptons section on the subject in his book tonight and Tiercels can do the job..... its just not the job that was intended for him... Today was probably more about "territory" than anything else. If he persists and kills then what to do?

Hi Griff,
I wouldn't worry to much about your little lad. Sounds like he's just playing around and some young birds really like to play. If he had meant to catch the crow he would have he was just trying to beat it in the air. Don't worry about him playing, let him enjoy being young. He'll soon settle into his work once you present him with the right opportunities.

hi mate
i've had crow kick the living s**t out of falcons let alone teircels i've also had a teircel that loved killing crows but like you said it wasent intensional but he did stop when he got battered by a big hill crow that weighed 1lb 10oz ended up in the bag but not without causing damage to the teircel.
all the best

Glad he is doing well again Griff. My gyr/saker nailed a crow the other day & it took me 5 minutes to get to him & when i did he was surrounded by at least 30 crows,if it was a pere tiercel i reckon he would have been a gonna.
Best of luck with him mate.

I hear you Paul...... what can you do if he's on one though.... not much I could have done yesterday other than swing the lure and call him in.... he only broke off when it put in.
Today I tested the theory and two crows were on the floor half a field away.... unhooded him and presented them....... he just left the fist and started ringing up and waiting on..... so i think yesterday was more to do with airspace and territory.... the crow was in the wrong place at the wrong time
