I've had this beautiful hybrid which is 3/4 peregrine. His history is unusual. He was bred in the wild. Father is a hybrid of unkown orgin, other than 1/2 peregrine. It is believed the other half is lanner. USFWS did not want hybrids in the wild, so a USFWS falconer/biologist had the father and siblings were removed from the wild and given to falconers. He was born on the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. So he was named Bavon. After St. Bavon. He is tempermental, but I can deal with that. Yet very playful, and very intelligent. I've flown prairie falcons before, so I'm used to tempermental birds. The bird is blond in the head, smallish feet. Slate blue in color, pale chest, no salmon wash like Anatums. I'm thinking his peregrine lineage may be arctic. Flight weight around 570-600 grams. He has feather issues. His tail grows in fine. His wings though are another issue. They grow in fine looking, then then break off about 1 inch from the follicle. This bird gets an excellent diet, quail, rodents, supplements. My other falcons have no feather issues on the same diet. I've thought for a while that he was a feather chewer. Even giving him parrot toys in his mew and transport box. Which he plays with. (He rides unhooded and does extremely well), and is also hood trained. But with closer examination, He may have something else going on. He has been examined by a vet, but another falconer suggested maybe mites in the follicle. I think I may treat him with Ivermecton. I am getting him examined again with concentration on the follicle issue. When I imp the feathers he does not pick at the imps. If any insights into this issue. I really like this bird, he is very smart and surprisigly affectionate.

I can't really give you an answer to the problem but I have an Imprinted Peale's Tiercel from this year and he chewed all his primaries out and most of the tail whilst still in blood so he sat there with no wings and half a tail, the feathers were strange as well with a double feather coming from the shaft also at the tip on some of them the shaft continued and another feather was growing.
He has since grown all new feathers and now is feather perfect with no problems and the only thing that shows what happened is all the new feathers are adult plumage
Incidentally I did not breed this bird he was bought in for a new bloodline

Hi hawkmom, i have seen this in 2 other falcons , a perlin, and a peregrine prairie, the first bird is about 12 yrs old now not my bird but has been flown at quarry all its life , its one of the reasons perlins are popular over hear , it is a real star and is well known, mid season it would pull out its tail feathers , not always enough room to imp , some seasons were cut short because off it , the other bird did it in its first year , and has now done it in its 2nd season, no sighn of mites, good food , the thing is they are both with other birds so if it was parasites you would think all birdswould be affected it would seem that the problem may be deeper than this, maybe genetic, or in breeding ? cheers, mark.
