I'm thinking of getting a Disco TD5 but see alot of them advertised with new engines being replaced at 100k and less and this worries me a bit.
Is the TD5 engine prone to problems and what sort of mileage are they good for?. I've currently got a 300tdi Disco and although happy with it could do with something quieter and less agricultural.
Any members got any thoughts on the TD5, good or bad??

They have a lot of problems, one of our sales team at work Was with Land Rover for 7 years, he left because he was sick of problems and complaints about the Discoverey and the Freelander, apparantley 40% of the service work they did was warranty repairs, so if you by a new one a plan on keeping it for 3 years you will be covered if you don`t you may have some heavy bills, go Jap Nissan Navara, or the Mitsi L200 are probabally the best at present closley, but check the service history and previous owners of the earlier L200 if they have been well looked after they will go for ever the ones that have been out to contractors or lease companys etc have usually been knocked about and thrashed over building sites and made to pull loads that they are not supposed to and this can cause problem as they don`t like loads of punishmnent and when they do go wrong thay can be expensive. I suppose the same will apply to the Navara but I have no experiance with them. You will also get better fuel consumption and lower servicing costs from a Jap car, as possibally lower insurance as I belive the TD5 is quite a high group.

Yeah, they have problems with the thrust bearings as well, they just can`t take loads of punishment, the only one I have heard of that can is the Toyota Hilux it`s almost indistructable, the only problem with the new ones is they are underpowered the only produce about 115 bhp the Navara, L200, Ford Ranger are all 150 bhp or more and it makes a hudge differance in a vechile of that size.

Take a look at the newer HiLux - the Vigo. I have a friend who has one - it's a 3.0l turbo diesel, so no shortage of grunt either. Toyotas never go far wrong either, in my experience. :)

Thanks for that Kev, my 300td1 is a late 96 on a P, ES spec without the leather. It's done 107K and I've probably spent a grand on mine this year but to be honest I expect to spend a bit every year considering it's age etc but it's never let me down and been just about everywhere in the UK during the time I've had it, but want something a else now but a TD5 is looking like a no no.

Thanks for that Dave, TD5 is looking bit of a non-starter but Navara looks promising.
Cheers,
Gerard.

I Can't advise on Discoveries, but I have two Defender TD5s and I punish the hell out of them off road. On road I am Mr 55mph. One has done 77,000 the other 100,000 (when it was stolen) and both are faultless. The older one (1999) had a new transfer box and a new ABS modulator under warranty and that's it. The older one was also due a set of bushes when it was nicked, but at 100k that's pretty bloody good. If you are fairly light on the right boot on the road and want unbreakable off roading I'd go for nothing but Land Rover.
Last week in the Cairngorms we had to cross and even drive along several rivers every day. The water was over the Land Rover bonnets when the water was at its worst and they just went straight through. All the Ford or Jap' stuff could not even get near thinking about crossing and even one of the Land Rovers without a high level air intake sucked a belly full of water and was killed! All the Land Rovers were TD5s.
Your choice and good luck, enjoy whatever you get.

Had two freelanders, one was a replacement for the first which spent most of its life at the dealers with major engine clutch and gearbox issues even they got fed up with the site of the thing. The replacement wasn't much better and fortunately they were both on 6 month hire with my work so I didnt get stuck with having to keep either of them. Havent tried a TD5 so cant comment but if theyre anything like the two freelanders I used I wouldn't bother.
My brother has had a number of discos and has spent an absolute fortune in repairs not including the stuff done under warranty.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

I’ve got a Discovery TD5; it had 20k on the clock when I got it its now done 109k.
It’s had 2 sets of new tyres, exhaust, front anti-roll bar, track rod, break pads and break disc.
It gets hammered off road but is serviced regularly and it’s never let me down.
Look after a TD5 {servicing} and it makes a good around reliable vehicle.
Before the TD5 I had a Discovery 200tdi that was a brilliant car, then I got a Discovery 300tdi and it was a bloody nightmare, cost me a fortune.
If I had gone on my experience with the 300tdi I would never had looked at a Discovery again.
