went out on my first squuirrel foray of the season today, it was cold and clear, if a little breezy.
went to go ou to the shed to get my gun (gamo shaddow .22) woved the wheelie bit that someone had sat in front of the shed door and almost imediately found myself with a rather hungry little robin at my feet, picking at little morsels from where the bin had sat. he continued to flllow me about and as i had nothing to offer the poor wee bugger i turnned some soil over in the flowere border to hopefuly expose something for him to eat. turned round and there he was sitting on top of my gun sleeve, bazen little thing eh!
so anyway went off to a bit of ground that has no game on but i used for zeroing my scope before going on the hunt. as you can see from the pic, my grouping aint too shabby! the group on the uper right of the pic is the first 3 shots then the one to the left of the bullseye was the second grouping.
so ten off to a grove of beech trees which dont hold to many squirrels but i thought i might have a chance at the odd woodie, pleanty came in but none within range, any that wee in range were in thicker cover ath the tops of the trees and noway id get a clean shot, so after an hour i gave up and moved on the squirrels. the next wood i came to was moving with squirrels but me being a bit excited having not shot at squirrels for a long time, let off a shot a bit prematurely and missed, then alerting every other squirrel to my presence and from then i saw pleanty, but only up in the trees, spruce trees so no chance of a clean shot at em!! towards the end of the wood i hear a hell of a comotion amoung some crows and maggies, so i go to investigat, but as its taking me out onto a public footpath near some houses i sleve up the gun. the crows take off and on further investigaion i find a young musket sitting in a pool of water under a bush at first i thought it was a kes but it got up and took off into the woods, poor thing had saken a bit of a beating fromthe corvids but seemed non the worse. onto another beech grove, a bit more sheltered this time and put up another squirrel who this time made for an oak tree and clamped down in a fork making getting a shot very difficult, he peeped round and i took a shot. missed. i waited to see what he would do but he waited untill i was realoading and ive never seem a squirrel move so quick! and alas he made it to a hollow in a beech tree. from then on i was hunting inot the sun and coulnt see a bloody thing. caught the odd glimps of a squirrel shaped blur dancing around infront of me while the sun blinded me but that was it realy!
mabey next time!
